MODULE 2.
Responding to the Adolescent
This module will focus on the interphase between the provider and the adolescent client. It will introduce you to
the DOH’s screening/assessment tool known as the Home, Education & Employment, Eating & Exercise, Activities
and Peer Relationships, Drug/Tobacco/Alcohol Use, Sexuality, Suicide and Depression, Safety/Spirituality
(HEEADSSS) assessment tool.
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
Discuss HEEADSSS to detect risk and protective factors in adolescents’ social, educational, and home
environment;
Discuss the importance of confidentiality, privacy, confidence, neutral, non-judgmental attitudes, respect,
and empathy which are factors that can improve the climate of the consultation; and
Identify practical parenting tips for the developmental changes happening in the adolescent.
