ESO204A: Fluid Mechanics and Rate processes
Tutorial-2
1. Will there be any fluid acceleration in a steady
flow of a liquid through the nozzle shown? If
yes, obtain an expression for it in terms of the
volumetric flow rate 𝑄̇ if the area of cross-
section is given by 𝐴(𝑥) = 𝐴0 (1 + 𝑒 −𝑥 ).
Assume 1-D flow. Note that the value of 𝑄̇ is
independent of 𝑥.
2. The velocity field in a steady flow is given in a rectangular coordinate
⃗ = 6𝑥𝑖 + (4𝑦 + 10)𝑗 + 2𝑡𝑘
system as 𝑉 ⃗ . What is the path line of the particle
which is at (2,6,4) at time 𝑡 = 2 𝑠?
3. For the curved surface AB which is the quadrant of a circular cylinder as in
shown in figure , determine the magnitude , direction and location of total
pressure exerted by water. Given the length of cylinder is 3m and water is
2m above B.

4. A oil tank has a right-triangular panel near the bottom, as shown in the
figure. Omitting 𝑝𝑎 , find the (a) hydrostatic force, and (b) CP on the panel.
5. The gate in the figure is 1.5 m wide, hinged at point B, and rests against a
smooth wall at point A. Compute (a) the force on the gate due to seawater
pressure, (b) the horizontal force 𝑃 exerted by the wall at point A, and
(c) the reactions at the hinge B.

6. A dam has a parabolic shape 𝑧 = (𝑥 ) as shown in the figure, with 𝑥0 =
0 0
3 𝑚 and 𝑧0 = 7 𝑚. The fluid is water, 𝛾 = 9810 𝑁 𝑚−3 , and atmospheric
pressure may be omitted. Compute the forces 𝐹𝐻 and 𝐹𝑉 on the dam and
their line of action. The width of the dam is 15 𝑚.
