Easy Math Notes with Examples

1. Algebra Basics

Algebra uses letters (like x or y) for unknown numbers.

Example: Simplify 3x + 5x = 8x

Solve: x + 4 = 10 x = 6

2. Linear Equations

Form: y = mx + c, where m = slope and c = y-intercept.

Example: y = 2x + 1 Slope = 2, y-intercept = 1

3. Simultaneous Equations

Two equations with the same variables.

Example:

x + y = 10

x-y=4

Add both 2x = 14 x = 7, then y = 3

4. Quadratic Equations

Form: ax2 + bx + c = 0

Example: x2 + 5x + 6 = 0 (x + 2)(x + 3) = 0 x = -2 or x = -3

5. Probability

Formula: Probability = Favourable outcomes / Total outcomes

Example: 3 red balls out of 5 Probability = 3/5

6. Percentages

To find % of a number: %/100 number

Example: 25% of 80 = 25/100 80 = 20

7. Pythagoras Theorem
Easy Math Notes with Examples

In right-angled triangles: a2 + b2 = c2

Example: a = 3, b = 4 c2 = 9 + 16 = 25 c = 5

8. Area & Perimeter

Rectangle Area = l w, Perimeter = 2(l + w)

Circle Area = r2, Circumference = 2r

Example: r = 7 Area = 49

9. Trigonometry (SOH-CAH-TOA)

SOH: sin = Opp/Hyp, CAH: cos = Adj/Hyp, TOA: tan = Opp/Adj

Example: sin 30 = 0.5, Hypotenuse = 10 Opp = 5

10. Graphs & Coordinates

Coordinates: (x, y), Gradient = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)

Example: Points (2,3) and (4,7) Gradient = (7-3)/(4-2) = 2

The probability formula, which is the ratio of favorable outcomes to total outcomes, is foundational in predicting the likelihood of events in games. For instance, if a game involves drawing a colored ball from a bag containing red and black balls, the probability formula can determine the chances of drawing each color. This helps in making strategic decisions based on potential outcomes .

Understanding the slope and y-intercept allows us to discern key characteristics of linear data. The slope indicates the rate of change between variables, crucial for interpreting graphs like economic trends or population growth. The y-intercept provides a starting value, allowing predictions or assessments at different data points. This foundational knowledge contributes to better analysis and decision-making in data-driven fields .

Coordinate geometry forms the basis of modern mapping and navigation systems, providing a mathematical framework for representing spatial information. By using coordinates to specify locations on maps, it enables precise plotting of routes and analysis of geographical features. This underpins technologies such as GPS, essential for accurate location tracking and navigation, enhancing travel and logistics efficiency .

The calculation of area and perimeter differs significantly between shapes due to their unique properties. For rectangles, area is determined by multiplying length by width, and perimeter by summing twice the lengths and widths. In circles, area is derived from the formula πr² while circumference, akin to perimeter, is calculated as 2πr. These formulas reflect the dimensional attributes specific to each shape, emphasizing their geometrical diversity .

Mathematical graphs visually depict relationships between different data sets, clarifying trends and patterns that might remain obscure in raw data. By plotting variables on coordinate axes, users can identify correlations or deviations, facilitating analysis in fields such as economics, biology, and engineering where visual representation can simplify complex data interpretations .

The quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0 is critical in modeling the parabolic trajectory of projectiles. It provides a mathematical framework to calculate important points like maximum height and range by solving for roots and vertex. This is especially relevant in physics and engineering, where the path and impact points of objects are essential for design and safety assessments .

Simultaneous equations can determine the precise interaction between two related variables, which is common in real-world scenarios like budgeting or balancing chemical equations. By setting up equations that reflect different constraints or conditions of a problem, solutions can be found that satisfy all conditions simultaneously. For example, in budgeting, equations might reflect total spending versus individual expenses, helping to allocate resources efficiently .

Pythagoras Theorem is essential for calculating distances in various applications like construction, navigation, and computer graphics. It provides a method to find the diagonal distance between two points in a right-angled coordinate system. This capability is vital for creating accurate maps, designing structurally sound buildings, and developing realistic simulations in digital environments .

Percentages are crucial for understanding financial growth, providing a standardized measure to compare different investments or financial metrics over time. By expressing changes in percentage terms, such as interest rates or investment returns, comparisons become more intuitive and decisions more informed. They offer clear visibility into compound growth, aiding in projecting future financial positions .

Understanding trigonometric ratios like SOH-CAH-TOA enables problem-solving in fields like architecture, navigation, and physics by providing methods to resolve angles and distances. For example, determining the height of a building without direct measurement or navigating by finding angles and distances on a map involves these ratios. They allow for precise calculations, essential for accuracy and efficiency in complex tasks .
