The government should spend more money on medical research to protect citizen’s

health rather than on protecting the environment. Do you agree or disagree?

Medical care and environmental science are inextricably intertwined in modern


society. It is believed that a national budget should be allocated for medical research
to protect people’s physical wellbeing in preference to the environment. From my
standpoint, I entirely disagree with this statement. This essay will rst analyze the
merits that the medical industry brings to people; followed by advantages deduced
from environmental research.

To begin with, plenty of advocates are inclined concur that medical advances are
exceptionally advantageous to human well-being. In reality, medical
accomplishments have contributed to the development of new medicines and
treatment guidelines in which people’s health conditions will also be preferential.
Take the tuberculosis vaccine as a prime example, the fruitful experiment on this
medicine has saved millions of lives every year according to the recent study
published by Oxford Medical Unit. Additionally, clinical research will be likely to
provide people with adequate health knowledge in order to protect them from
health-related risks such as how to identify the symptoms of cardiovascular diseases
with rst-aid treatments.

Furthermore, preserving the environment should not be overlooked in light of its


associations with human health. In reality, people have struggled with critical
diseases stemming from excessive toxic waste which have degraded environment
severely. As a result, these pollutants will spark water contamination and air
pollution which could be the culprits of lung cancer and severe diarrhea, especially
in the economically disadvantaged regions. In tandem with this, global warming
resulted in by environmental pollution is also another driver beyond the
deterioration in people’s tness. For instance, climate change has facilitated the
multiplication of vectors to cause several infectious diseases in some African regions
in dry seasons.

In conclusion, although medical research brings more bene ts in protecting people’s


well-being, I am not of the opinion that it should receive more investments than
environmental protection.
