Rustic Ribbed Beanie

Materials Needed –
- Any DK weight/8 Ply or Aran Weight/10 Ply or Chunky Weight/12 Ply or Super Chunky/14 Ply
(The thinner the yarn, the floppier the hat will be. Thicker yarn will make the hat more rigid)
- Hook – use the size recommended for the type of yarn you are using or size as desired.
- Tape Measure
- Darning needle
- Scissors
- Faux Fur Pom pom if required

Ch - Chain
St – Stitch
Sl St - Slip Stitch
DC – Double Crochet
HTC - Half Treble Crochet
BLO - Back Loop Only
FLO - Front Loop Only
Turning Chains –
Chain 1 does NOT count as a Stitch
Chain 2 does NOT count as a stitch unless advised
Gauge –
A gauge is not required as you will be working to overall measurements shown in the table below.
Sizing –
The guide below shows approximate measurements for different size Rustic Ribbed Beanies. Follow the measurements
given for either ‘Size’ or ‘Head Circumference’.
There will be some flexibility to these measurements as the ribbed effect of the beanie will provide some stretch and the
upturn of the brim can be made larger/smaller as required.

RUSTIC RIBBED BEANIE - PATTERN
Chain as many as needed to obtain the correct ‘Height of work’ as shown in the sizing table above.
Keep in mind that your chain may shorten a little once you have started working stitches into this chain.
I would recommend that you measure your work again after a few rows to check. There is some room for negotiation on the
measurements given, as mentioned earlier.
1. In the 2nd chain from the hook and in each Ch across work 1 HTC. Ch 1, TURN.
I prefer to do a longer ch 1 at the end of each row and then work into the very 1 st stitch on the next row. However, if you prefer you can
instead ch 2 and turn, counting your ch 2 as your 1st HTC of the next row and then working into the 2nd stitch from there on.
2. 1 BLO HTC in each St across. Ch 1, TURN

Repeat Row 2 until your work measures the correct length (head
circumference). If possible, you could always measure your work around
the head of the person it is intended for to ensure it is the perfect size.
Finishing on an even row, fold your work
over on itself so that the foundation chain lies directly under where your
next row should be. Joining the two edges together with slip stitches, you
should work through the FLO of the last row and through the full chain
of the foundation row underneath.

The inside of the hat is currently on the outside.
When you have slip stitched to the end of the row, fasten off leaving a long tail. You will
use this tail to weave in and out of the edge of your work.
Thread the tail end through a darning needle and work your way in and out around the edge
of your work, skipping approximately 3 rows each time until you reach where you started.
Pull on the tail end tightly so that the side gathers up together. Keeping the tension tight,
weave the end in and out of the gathered area to secure as tightly as possible. I find that
weaving to opposite sides helps to give it a firmer hold.
Fasten off.
If you would like a simple beanie, turn your work inside out (The ‘Right Side’ will now be
on the outside) and fold up the bottom to form the brim. Your beanie is complete!
If you would like a more finished edge;
With the beanie still inside out, attach your yarn to the
opposite side and DC evenly along the end of the rows.
Once finished, sl st into the first DC worked on this edge and
fasten off.
Ensure all ends are weaved in and turn the beanie inside out.
(The ‘Right Side’ will now be on the outside).
Fold up the brim, so that the DC are now facing out.
If you wish you could add a pom pom to the top.
FINISHED!
