has infinitely many solutions, is
(A) 3 (B) 9 (C) 5 (D) 15
Ans. : (b)
For infinitely many solutions,
a1 b1 c1
= =
a2 b2 c2
Here, a 1
= 3, a2 = k, b1 = 5, b2 = 15, c1 = −8 ,
c2 = −24
So, 3
k

the cost of 1 chair is Rs. x and the cost of 1 table is Rs. y , then the situation can
be represented algebraically as
(A) 3x + y = 900, 3x + 5y = 2100
(B) x + 3y = 900, 3x + 5y = 2100
(C) 3x + y = 900, 5x + 3y = 2100
(D) x + 3y = 900, 5x + 3y = 2100
Ans. : (c)
3x + y = 900, 5x + 3y = 2100

Page 1
(A) coincident (B) parallel
(C) intersecting exactly at one point (D) perpendicular to each other
Ans. : (b)
and
a1 6 2 b1 −2 2 c1 9 3
= = , = = = =
a2 3 1 b2 −1 1 c2 12 4
a1 b1 c1
∴ = ≠
a2 b2 c2
So, the system is inconsistent and hence the lines are parallel.
5. Which of the following is not a solution of the pair of equations 3x − 2y = 4 and
6x − 4y = 8 ?
(A) x = 2, y = 1 (B) x = 4, y = 4 (C) x = 6, y = 7 (D) x = 5, y = 3
Ans. : (d)
The value of y for x = 5 is

(5) − 2 =
11
Hence, the correct option is (d).
* A statement of Assertion (A) is followed by a statement of Reason (R). [3]
Choose the correct option.
6. Statement A (Assertion) : If the pair of equations x + 2y + 7 = 0, 3x + ky + 21 = 0
represent coincident lines, then the value of k is 6 .
Statement R (Reason) : The pair of linear equations are coincident lines if they
have no solution.
(A) (a) Both assertion (A) and reason ( R ) are true and reason (R) is the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(B) Both assertion (A) and reason ( R ) are true and reason (R) is not the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(C) Assertion (A) is true but reason ( R ) is false.
(D) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.
Ans. : (c) : The given equations are
x + 2y + 7 = 0 and 3x + ky + 21 = 0.
The given equations will represent coincident lines if they have infinitely many
solutions i.e.,
a1 b1 c1 1 2 7
= = ⇒ = = ⇒ k = 6
a2 b2 c2 3 k 21
Hence, the given system of equations will represent coincident lines, if k = 6 .
So, Assertion is true but Reason is false.
7. Statement A (Assertion) : The system of equations 3x − y − 5 = 0, 6x − 2y − k = 0
has no solution if k = 10 .
Statement R (Reason) : The pair of equations a x + b y + c = 0 and 1 1 1
has no solution if .
a1 b1 c1
a2 x + b2 y + c2 = 0 = ≠
a2 b2 c2
Page 2
(A) (a) Both assertion (A) and reason ( R ) are true and reason (R) is the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(B) Both assertion (A) and reason ( R ) are true and reason (R) is not the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(C) Assertion (A) is true but reason ( R ) is false.
(D) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.
Ans. : (d) : Given, system of equations is 3x − y − 5 = 0 and 6x − 2y − k = 0
Here, and
a1 3 1 b1 −1 1 c1 −5 5
= = , = = = =
a2 6 2 b2 −2 2 c2 −k k
For no solution, a1
a2
=
b1
b2
≠
c1
c2
1 1 5 5 1
∴ = ≠ ⇒ ≠ ⇒ k ≠ 10
2 2 k k 2
Hence, for every value of k except 10 , given system has no solution.
So, Assertion is false but Reason is true.
8. Statement A (Assertion) : The pair of linear equations 2x − y − 5 = 0 and
x − y − 3 = 0 represent intersecting lines.
Statement R (Reason): The linear equations 2x − y − 5 = 0 and x − y − 3 = 0 meet
the y-axis at (0, −5) and (0, 3) respectively.
Ans. : (c) : The given system of linear equations is
2x − y − 5 = 0 … (i)
x − y − 3 = 0 … (ii)
Now,
a1 2 b1 −1 c1 −5 5
= , = = 1, = =
a2 1 b2 −1 c2 −3 3
So, given equations represent intersecting lines.
(0, −5) satisfy equation (i) but (0, 3) does not satisfy equation (ii).
So, Assertion is true but Reason is false.

x
Substracting (iv) frpm (iii)
12 12
+ 9y − + 8y = 24 + 10
x x
17y = 34
y = 2
Putting y in (iii) equation
12

x
12

x
12

x
x = 2
So that solution is x = 2, y = 2.
10. On comparing the ratios a1

, and without drawing them, find out
a2 b2 c2
whether the lines representing the following pairs of linear equations intersect
at a point, are parallel or coincide.
9x + 3y + 12 = 0
18x + 6y + 24 = 0
Ans. : Given equation are:
9x + 3y + 12 = 0
18x + 6y + 24 = 0
Where, a1 = 9, b1 = 3, c1 = 12
a2 = 18, b2 = 6, c3 = 24
We get
a1 9 b1 3
= , =
a2 18 b2 6
and c1
c2
=
12
24
a1 b1 c1 1
⇒ = = =
a2 b2 c2 2
Thus the pair of linear equation are coincide.

11. Reena has pend and pencils which together are 40 in number. If she has 5 more
pencils and 5 less pens, the number of pencils would become 4 times the
number of pens. Find the original number of pens and pencils.
Ans. : Let the number of pens be x and that of pencils be y. Then,
x + y = 40 .....(i)
and, (y + 5) = 4(x - 5)
⇒ y + 5 = 4x - 20
Page 4
⇒ 5 + 20 = 4x - y
⇒ 4x - y = 25 ......(ii)
Adding equation (i) and equation (ii) we get
x + 4x = 40 + 25
⇒ 5x = 65
65
⇒ x = = 13
50
Putting x = 13 in equation (i) we get
13 + y = 40
⇒ y = 40 - 13 = 27
Hence, Reena has 13 pens and 27 pencils.
12. Draw the graphs of the equations x−y +1 = 0 and 3x + 2y − 12 = 0 . Write the co-
ordinates of the vertices of the triangle formed by these lines and the x -axis
and shade the corresponding triangular region.
x − y + 1 = 0 Or
Ans. :
x = y −1
X 0 1 2
Y 1 2 3
3x + 2y − 12 = 0
⇒ 3x = 12 − 2y
Divide the above equation by 3 ,
12−2y
x =
3
x 4 2 0
y 0 3 6
Hence, the graphic representation is as follows:
From the figure, it can be observed that these lines are intersecting each other at
Page 5
point (2, 3) and x - axis at (−1, 0) and (4, 0) . Therefore the vertices of the triangle are
(2, 3), (−1, 0) and (4, 0)
13. A train travels a distance of 480 km at a uniform speed. If the speed had been
8km/hr less, then it would have taken 3 hours more to cover the same distance.

Places A and B are 100 km apart on a highway. One car starts from A and another
from B at the same time. If the cars travel in the same direction at different
speeds, they meet in 5 hours. If they travel towards each other they meet in 1
hour. What are the speeds of the two cars?
Ans. : Assume the speeds of the cars to be ×km/hr and y km/hr
When the cars are traveling in the same direction
Relative speed = x − y
Distance = 100km
Apply Time =
Distance
Speed
100
Time = = 5hrs
x−y
100
⇒ x−y =
5
x − y = 20 … … (i)
When the cars are going in the opposite direction
Relative speed = x + y
Time =
100
x+y
= 1
⇒ x + y = 100 … … (ii)
Add equations (i) and (ii),
2x = 120
Divide by 2 ,
x = 60
Substitute in (ii),
60 + y = 100
⇒ y = 100 − 60
⇒ y = 40
Hence the speeds of the cars are 60km/hr and 40km/hr

14. Solve for x & y.
1 1 3 1 1 −1
+ = and − =
3x+y 3x−y 4 2(3x+y) (3x−y) 8
Ans. : Let 3x+y
1
= p and 3x−y
1
= q
Now, the reduced equations are
3
p+q =
4
⇒ 4p + 4q = 3 … … (i)
Also,
p −1
−q =
2 8
⇒ 4p − 8q = −1 … … (ii)
We will use elimination method to solve these Eqn. (i) and (ii)
Subtracting Eqn. (ii) from (i)
4p + 4q = 3
4p − 8q = −1
(−) (+) (+)
12q=4
4
⇒ q =
12
1
⇒ q =
3
Substituting value of q in Eqn. (i)
1 3
p+ =
3 4
3 1 5
⇒ p = − =
4 3 12
Now we need to find out the values of x and y,
As assumed, 1
3x+y
= p and 1
3x−y
= q
⇒
3x+y

12
and 1
3x−y
=
1
⇒ 3x + y =
12
5
… … (iii) and 3x − y = 3 … … (iv)
Using elimination method, adding equation (iii) and (iv).
12
3x + y =
5
3x − y = 3
27
6x =
5
9
⇒ x =
10
Putting the value of x in Eqn. (iv), we get
9
⇒ 3( )−y = 3
10
27
⇒ −y = 3
10
27
⇒ y = −3
10
3
⇒ y = −
10
So, the value of x is 9
10
and value of y is −

Ans. : Let the two natural numbers ne N and N +5 .
The difference of their reciprocals is 1
10
.
1 1 1
⇒ − =
N N +5 10
N +5−N 1
⇒ =
N (N +5) 10
5 1
⇒ =
N (N +5) 10
⇒ N (N + 5) = 50
2
⇒ N + 5N − 50 = 0
Splitting the middle term,
2
⇒ N + 10N − 5N − 50 = 0
⇒ N (N + 10) − 5(N + 10) = 0
⇒ (N − 5)(N + 10) = 0
Applying zero product rule property,
⇒ (N − 5) = 0 Or(N + 10) = 0
⇒ N = 5 or N = −10
N cannot be negative since it is a natural number.
∴ N = 5
Hence the numbers N and N +5 are 5 and 10.

15. A test consists of 'True' or 'False' questions. One mark awarded for every
correct answer while 1
4
mark is deducted for every wrong answer. A student
knew answers to some of the questions. Rest of the questions he attempted by
guessing. He answered 120 questions and scored 95 marks.
(i) If answer to all questions he attempted by guessing were wrong, then the
number of questions he answered correctly is
(a) 24 (b) 96 (c) 100 (d) 90
(ii) The number of questions he guessed, is
(a) 20 (b) 96 (c) 20 (d) 90
(iii) If answers to all questions he attempted by guessing were wrong and
answered 80 correctly, then how many marks he got?
(a) 40 (b) 45 (c) 70 (d) 35
(iv) If answer to all questions he attempted by guessing were wrong, then the
number of questions answered correctly to score 95 marks is
(a) 100 (b) 105 (c) 90 (d) 95
Ans. : (i) (c): Suppose he answered x questions by guessing and he knew answer
to y questions. Then,
x x
x + y = 120 and y − = 95 ⇒ (x + y) − (y − ) = 25 ⇒ x = 20
4 4
Putting x = 20 in x + y = 120 , we get y = 100 .
(ii) (a): From (i), we obtain x = 20
(iii) (c): He answered 80 questions correctly and the remaining 40 questions were
wrong as he answered them by guessing.

(iv) (a): Suppose x questions were answered correctly. Then, the remaining (
120 − x ) were answered by guessing and were wrong.
