Understanding DNA and Genetics

Genetics is the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in living organisms, focusing on how traits are passed from parents to offspring. It encompasses various subfields and examines the structure, function, and behavior of genes, as well as their impact on health and disease. Genetic disorders result from mutations or chromosomal abnormalities, and research aims to understand these variations to develop targeted medical treatments.

Genetics

Genetics is the branch of biology that studies genes, genetic variation, and heredity in living
organisms. It is concerned with how traits and characteristics are passed from parents to
offspring through discrete units called genes. Modern genetics also explores the structure and
function of genes, their behavior in cells, and their role in populations and evolution [1] [2] .
Gregor Mendel, a 19th-century scientist, is considered the founder of genetics for his work on
trait inheritance patterns in pea plants. Today, genetics includes various subfields such as
molecular genetics, epigenetics, population genetics, and human genetics [1] [2] [3] .
Genes are segments of DNA inside cells that carry instructions for traits like appearance, health,
and behavior. Humans have about 20,000 genes organized in 23 pairs of chromosomes. Genes
influence traits ranging from eye color to disease susceptibility [4] [5] .
Genetic disorders arise when gene mutations or chromosomal abnormalities affect health.
Genetics research aims to understand how gene variations cause disease and to develop
targeted medical treatments [6] [3] [4] .
In summary, genetics covers how genetic information is inherited, how genes function within
organisms, and how genetic differences contribute to diversity and disease [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] .
