2. Background Research/Literature Review

2.1 Discuss papers related to IoT in Renewable Energy with a focus on wind and profile General
Electric and its business model

Research

Energy consumption worldwide increases permanently according to population growth;

traditionally, energy generation comes from fossil fuels. However, adverse environmental impacts have
led scientists and engineers to develop renewable energy alternatives such as hydraulic, wind, solar,
and biometric. Wind energy is the second renewable energy generator, and it is expected to grow in the
coming years (Hossain et al., 2021).

The operation optimization in wind energy generation technology is a determining factor in

getting a sustainable balance between the investment, maintenance cost, and profits of the wind turbine,
facing challenges related to mechanic, electronic, and control systems design, which usually increase
the manufacturing cost and demand constant maintenance to increase the durability of the turbine. On
the other hand, wind turbines are located in remote areas or offshore to get better wind conditions,
increasing the adverse weather conditions and requiring permanent monitoring and fail detection
systems to guarantee system efficiency and operability. The Internet of Things has allowed the
implementation of remote monitoring systems of the wind turbine conditions, adjusting the plant
performance according to the wind speed and direction, optimizing the functioning, and providing data
to improve decision-making to avoid negative consequences (Hossain et al., 2021). GE designed an
application through its Digital Wind Farm program supported by IoT, not only focusing on the
diagnostic and performance monitoring of the turbine but also using machine learning to determine
possible anomalies and quantify them, let the turbine automatically reset or adjust its configuration to
optimize the energy generation or adjust performance according to environmental conditions, reducing
the maintenance cost by up to 20% and unplanned maintenance around 13% (Lal & Johnson. 2017).

The weather conditions forecast is another essential factor in the wind energy generation for
business optimization, considering that reliable energy should have high predictability and low
variability, conditions that wind energy is not consistent due to location topography, reducing and
redirecting wind conditions. Weather forecasting has improved with the implementation of artificial
intelligence combining different forecast models to get accurate results, and the Internet of Things has
enabled the capture of data in real-time through different meteorological sensors installed in wind

turbines to transmit data related to wind speed and direction, temperature, and atmospheric pressure.
Those technological advances provide permanent high-quality data to improve the forecast model's
accuracy. Nevertheless, the Internet of Things enables the receive and combine data from different
sources, not just from the wind turbine but also meteorological information from the nearest wind
power plant, airports, and meteorological stations to improve the accuracy of the wind forecast models,
identifying wind fluctuation and mitigate intermittency in the energy generation (Alhmoud & Al-
Zoubi, 2019). GE developed an energy forecasting application that predicts the weather to correctly
estimate the energy generation in strong wind seasons, increasing profitability for the digital wind
farmer owner and setting up maintenance that caused downtime on low wind days (Lal & Johnson.
2017).

Considering the limitations of wind energy related to high variability, the integration of the
wind turbines with smart grids with IoT technology lets to be a part of an energy system, electricity
networks composed of different energy generators, storage infrastructure, hardware, and software
solutions to provide sufficient and constant energy to consumers (Teimourian, 2021). In the smart grid,
the consumers receive the energy, which is used through IoT intelligent meters, smart sockets, and
appliances with sensors, providing energy consumption data to applications that let them monitor and
control their energy expenses, encouraging them to reduce unnecessary consumption. Additionally, the
grid uses consumption data to automate the energy distribution based on demand, assess better energy
sources according to cost and availability, and leverage the adoption of clean energy on a broader scale.
Furthermore, the smart grid can program a better schedule for preventive maintenance of the energy
sources without impacting the energy distribution, and the big data collected from the different IoT
devices lets to manage, detect, and predict any problem in the smart grid. GE created a grid between
the digital wind farm consumers, encouraging them to produce energy for the system, supported by the
business model and IoT technology advantages (Lal & Johnson. 2017). Nevertheless, GE is not
integrated with an IoT grid or involved final consumers in the energy consumption network to optimize
and improve its energy generation model.
