Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
Trees are among the most valuable natural resources on Earth. They
play a crucial role in supporting life, not only for humans but also for
countless species of animals, birds, and insects. Often called the "green
lungs of the Earth," trees absorb carbon dioxide—a harmful greenhouse
gas—and release oxygen into the atmosphere. This process of
photosynthesis helps maintain the balance of gases in the air, which is
essential for all living organisms.
In addition to providing clean air, trees offer many resources such as
fruits, nuts, wood, rubber, and medicinal products. Wood from trees is
used for making furniture, paper, and even houses. Many life-saving
medicines are extracted from tree bark, leaves, and roots. Trees also act
as natural air-conditioners by providing shade and releasing water vapor,
which cools the surroundings and makes the climate more pleasant.
Trees are also important for conserving soil and water. Their roots hold
the soil in place, preventing soil erosion during heavy rains. They also
help recharge groundwater levels by allowing rainwater to seep into the
earth. Forests, which are large collections of trees, act as natural water
reservoirs and support rivers and streams. Furthermore, trees reduce
noise pollution, act as windbreakers, and beautify our surroundings.
The importance of trees extends to their role in fighting climate change.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide, which helps to slow down global warming.
With increasing deforestation and industrial pollution, our planet is facing
serious environmental issues. To solve this crisis, we must protect
existing trees and plant new ones. Schools, communities, and
governments should work together to raise awareness about tree
conservation. Every individual should take a step toward afforestation
and create a greener, healthier future for generations to come.
