Understanding Reproduction: Types Explained

Reproduction is the biological process of producing new individuals to ensure species continuation, categorized into asexual and sexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction involves a single parent and results in genetically identical offspring, with methods including fission, budding, and vegetative propagation. Sexual reproduction involves two parents and gametes, leading to genetic variation through meiosis.

Reproduction - Science Notes (Basic to Advanced)

1. What is Reproduction?

Reproduction is the biological process by which new individuals (offspring) are produced, ensuring the

continuation of species.

2. Types of Reproduction

There are two main types of reproduction: Asexual and Sexual.

A. Asexual Reproduction (Class 10 Level)

- Involves a single parent

- No gametes involved

- Offspring are genetically identical (clones)

Types:

* Fission - e.g., Amoeba, Paramecium

* Budding - e.g., Hydra, Yeast

* Fragmentation - e.g., Spirogyra

* Regeneration - e.g., Planaria

* Vegetative Propagation - e.g., Potato (tuber), Onion (bulb)

* Spore Formation - e.g., Rhizopus (bread mold)

B. Sexual Reproduction (Class 10-12 Level)

- Involves two parents

- Gametes (sperm and egg) are involved

- Leads to genetic variation

- Involves meiosis (reduction division)
