Psychrometry

Psychrometry is the study of the physical and thermodynamic proper es of moist air and its behavior
under various condi ons. It is a fundamental concept in HVAC (Hea ng, Ven la on, and Air
Condi oning) and meteorology, used to analyze and control air proper es for comfort and industrial
processes.

Key Terms in Psychrometry

1. Dry Bulb Temperature (DBT):

o The actual air temperature measured with a thermometer, expressed in °C or °F.

2. Wet Bulb Temperature (WBT):

o The temperature air would reach if water evaporates into it, measured with a
thermometer covered by a wet cloth.

3. Dew Point Temperature:

o The temperature at which air becomes saturated and moisture begins to condense.

4. Rela ve Humidity (RH):

o The percentage of moisture in the air compared to the maximum it can hold at a given
temperature.

5. Specific Humidity:

o The weight of water vapor per unit weight of dry air.

6. Enthalpy:

o The total heat content of moist air, including both sensible and latent heat.

7. Satura on Point:

o The condi on when air holds the maximum amount of water vapor possible at a given
temperature.
Psychrometric Chart

A psychrometric chart is a graphical representa on of the proper es of moist air. It includes:

 Dry bulb temperature (horizontal axis).

 Humidity ra o (ver cal axis).

 Curved lines for constant rela ve humidity.

 Slanted lines for wet bulb temperature.

 Horizontal lines for enthalpy.

Applica ons of Psychrometry

1. HVAC Design:

o Ensuring comfortable indoor environments by controlling temperature and humidity.

2. Dehumidifica on and Humidifica on:

o Maintaining proper air moisture levels in residen al, commercial, and industrial spaces.

3. Drying Processes:

o Used in industries like food processing, tex les, and pharmaceu cals.

4. Weather Analysis:

o Understanding atmospheric moisture and predic ng condensa on or precipita on.

5. Cooling and Hea ng Calcula ons:

o Determining the energy requirements for air condi oning systems.

Processes in Psychrometry

1. Sensible Hea ng:

o Increasing air temperature without changing moisture content.

2. Sensible Cooling:

o Decreasing air temperature without changing moisture content.

3. Humidifica on:

o Adding moisture to the air.

4. Dehumidifica on:

o Removing moisture from the air.

5. Evapora ve Cooling:

o Cooling air by evapora ng water into it.
