KNE312 Structural Mechanics
Tutorial/Assignment 4 2014
Hand in Q4 – due 11 am Tuesday 12th August
Please submit assignments to the KNE312 box adjacent to the secretary’s office (or submit in class).
Late submissions will not be accepted. Marks will be deducted for solutions that are untidy, poorly
presented, difficult to follow, excessively long or contain inappropriate units or significant figures.
1. If not already done so, repeat the problems of Tutorial/Assignment 3 using graphical integration.
2. For the beams shown in Figure 1 assume constant EI and use the method of virtual work to…
(i) determine the slope and deflection at the mid-point of span AB of Fig. 1(i);
(ii) determine the deflection at hinge D and also the relative rotation of the beams either side of the
hinge in Fig. 1(ii).
(iii) If the hinge in Fig. 1(ii) were removed to give a single continuous beam from A to C, how could
you use the results of part (ii) to determine the support reactions?
Figure 1
3. Use the Force Method to determine all support reactions and draw the final bending moment diagram for
the continuous beam shown in Figure 2. In your solution introduce hinges at C, D and E and treat the
removed bending moments as the redundant forces.
Figure 2
4. This week’s assignment question: Analyse the frame in Figure 3 using the Force Method with the
bending moments at B and C and the moment reaction at D as your redundant forces (i.e. your primary
structure will consist of three simply supported spans). Draw the final internal force (M and V) diagrams,
observing sign and plotting conventions, and indicate magnitudes of all significant values. Assume EI is
constant along the entire length of the beam.
Figure 3
5. Use structural analysis software (e.g. SpaceGass or Multiframe) to check your answers to the above
questions (see notes on MyLo).

Please submit assignments to the KNE312 box adjacent to the secretary’s office (or submit in class).
Late submissions will not be accepted. Marks will be deducted for solutions that are untidy, poorly
presented, difficult to follow, excessively long or contain inappropriate units or significant figures.

and N. Neglect the effect of shear and axial forces on the structural deformations. Bending stiffnesses are
as indicated.
