Vector Problems - Detailed Solutions

1) OA = 2i - j - k, OB = 2i - j + 2k

P divides AB in 2:1 internally

OP = (2OB + OA)/(2+1) = 2i - j + k

2) Opposite to -3/4 j => unit vector = j

3) Example: a = i, b = -i => |a|=|b| but a != b

4) a = 2i + j + 2k, b = j + k

a x b = -i -2j +2k, |a x b|=3

Unit vector: -1/3 i -2/3 j +2/3 k

5) Divide (a-2i) and (2a+b) externally in 2:1:

P = [2(2a+b) - (a-2i)]/(2-1) = 3a + 2b + 2i

6) AB = j + k, AC = 3i - j + 4k

BC = 3i - 2j + 3k

AM = 1/2 BC + AB = 3/2 i - j + 5/2 k

|AM| = sqrt(9/4 + 1 + 25/4) = sqrt(9.5) approx. 3.08

7) AC = 2CB => AB = AC + CB = 3CB => CB = 1/3 AB

So, C = B - 1/3 AB

8) Direction: a = i -2j, |a| = sqrt(5)

To get magnitude 7: v = 7/sqrt(5) * a

9) cos60 deg = 1/2 => a.b = |a|^2 * 1/2 = 9/2 => |a|^2 = 9 => |a|=|b|=3

10) |a - sqrt(2)b|^2 = 1

1 + 2 -2sqrt(2)costheta = 1 => costheta = 1/sqrt2 => theta = 45 deg

11) a = 2i+3j+2k, b = 2i+2j+k

a.b = 12, |b|=3 => Projection = 4

12) |a + b|^2 = 2 + 2costheta = 4cos²(theta/2) => |a+b| = 2cos(theta/2)

13) |a| = 2|b|, (a+b).(a-b)=12

=> |a|^2 - |b|^2 = 12

=> 4|b|^2 - |b|^2 =12 => |b|^2=4 => |b|=2, |a|=4

14) a + b + c = 0 => |a+b+c|^2 = 0

=> |a|^2+|b|^2+|c|^2 + 2(a.b + b.c + c.a)=0

=> 9+25+49+2X=0 => X=-41.5

15) |a+b|=1 for unit vectors => |a+b|^2 = 1 = 2 + 2costheta => costheta = -1/2

|a-b|^2 = 2 - 2(-1/2) = 3 => |a-b| = sqrt(3)
