Thread Consumption Calculation Guide

The document outlines formulas for calculating thread consumption in garment production, including thread length per piece, adjustments for wastage, total thread length for an order, and the number of thread cones required. It provides specific examples using a T-shirt to illustrate the calculations. Key variables include total seam length, stitches per inch, thread multipliers based on stitch type, and wastage percentage.

🔢 Thread Consumption Formula Breakdown

1. Thread Length per Piece (in inches)

Formula:

excel
CopyEdit
=Total_Seam_Length * SPI * Thread_Multiplier

 Total_Seam_Length = Total stitching length for one garment (in inches)

 SPI (Stitches Per Inch) = Number of stitches per inch (varies by stitch type)
 Thread_Multiplier = Conversion factor based on stitch type:
o Lockstitch ≈ 3.0
o Overlock ≈ 4.0
o Chainstitch ≈ 3.5
o Flatlock ≈ 5.0

2. Thread Length per Piece with Wastage

excel
CopyEdit
=Thread_Length_per_Piece * (1 + Wastage%)

 Adds allowance for thread wastage (e.g., 10% → 1.10)

3. Thread Length for Entire Order (in yards)

excel
CopyEdit
=(Thread_Length_with_Wastage * Quantity) / 36

 Converts inches to yards (1 yard = 36 inches)

 Multiplies by number of pieces in the order

4. Number of Thread Cones Needed

excel
CopyEdit
=Thread_Length_per_Order / Thread_Cone_Length

 Assumes thread cones come in standard lengths (e.g., 5000 yards)

🧮 Example (T-Shirt):

 Seam length = 120 inches

 SPI = 10
 Multiplier (Lockstitch) = 3.0
 Wastage = 10%
 Order qty = 1000
 Cone = 5000 yards

Step-by-step:

1. 120 * 10 * 3.0 = 3600 inches per piece

2. 3600 * 1.1 = 3960 inches per piece with wastage
3. 3960 * 1000 / 36 = 110000 yards total
4. 110000 / 5000 = 22 cones needed
