In the essay "Shall We Walk?" by Pura Santillan-Castrence,
walking is more than just a physical activity. It’s an exploration of
oneself and the world. The act of walking allows us to know
ourselves and our surroundings better. This essay affected me
because as a student I discovered the joy of walking. After our
classes, my friend Sam and I would walk home together.
Castrence’s description of her walking experience made me
think of my own life. Besides saving fare, walking with Sam is fun.
Our conversations last longer than when we take a tricycle ride
where the trip is faster. I started to think of the times I got too
busy and failed to notice the simple beauty around me. Her
emphasis on being observant reminded me that sometimes we
need to pause and appreciate the things we often overlook.
In my experience being outdoors and walking helps me process
my thoughts and emotions. I realized it saves money, I can
appreciate the little things around me and surprisingly it’s not
lonely to walk alone. Every time I walked it feels lighter and there
is a thought that tells me that I am ready of facing whatever
the challenges that come in my way.
Lastly, Castrence’s essay is a reminder to us to value the simple
things in our life and find the beauty in ordinary experiences.
Walking is not just an simple exercise but a way to connect with
oneself, nature and the world. It’s a simple act with deep meaning.
It’s an invitation to walk not just physically but emotionally and
spiritually in our lives. Thanks to this essay and my personal
experience I now know walking will be part of my life.
