📐 Geometry Basics
1. Basic Shapes & Terms
● Point: An exact location in space. (No size)
● Line: Extends forever in both directions.
● Line Segment: Part of a line with two endpoints.
● Ray: A line that starts at a point and goes infinitely in one direction.
● Angle: Formed by two rays with a common endpoint (called the vertex).
2. Types of Angles
● Acute: Less than 90°
● Right: Exactly 90°
● Obtuse: Between 90° and 180°
● Straight: Exactly 180°
🎯 Tip: Think “A-cute” = small and adorable, like a baby angle.
3. Triangles
● By sides:
○ Equilateral: 3 equal sides
○ Isosceles: 2 equal sides
○ Scalene: No equal sides
● By angles:
○ Acute triangle: All angles < 90°
○ Right triangle: One 90° angle
○ Obtuse triangle: One angle > 90°
🧮 Sum of interior angles of any triangle = 180°
4. Quadrilaterals
Four-sided shapes:
● Square: 4 equal sides, 4 right angles
● Rectangle: Opposite sides equal, 4 right angles
● Parallelogram: Opposite sides parallel and equal
● Rhombus: 4 equal sides, opposite angles equal
● Trapezoid (US) / Trapezium (UK): One pair of parallel sides
All quadrilaterals = 360° total interior angles
5. Perimeter & Area
● Perimeter = distance around a shape
● Area = amount of space inside
Formulas:
● Rectangle:
○ Area = l × w
○ Perimeter = 2(l + w)
● Triangle:
○ Area = ½ × base × height
● Circle:
○ Area = πr²
○ Circumference = 2πr
🧠 Geometry Superpowers
● Use a protractor for measuring angles!
● Label diagrams—seriously, it helps.
● If it looks like a square... prove it with side lengths or angles.
