Class Notes: Photosynthesis
Definition
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert
light energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose.
It occurs mainly in the chloroplasts of plant cells, which contain the green pigment
chlorophyll.

Requirements for Photosynthesis
1. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) – Taken in from the atmosphere via stomata.
2. Water (H₂O) – Absorbed by roots from the soil.
3. Sunlight – Provides energy for the reaction.
4. Chlorophyll – Pigment in leaves that captures sunlight.
Stages of Photosynthesis
1. Light-Dependent Reaction (occurs in the thylakoid membranes):
o Light energy splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen (photolysis).
o Oxygen is released as a by-product.
2. Light-Independent Reaction (Calvin Cycle – occurs in the stroma):
o Hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide to form glucose.
Importance of Photosynthesis
Produces oxygen necessary for the survival of most living organisms.
Provides glucose (food) which is the base of the food chain.
Helps reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
Maintains balance in the ecosystem.
Factors Affecting Photosynthesis
1. Light intensity
2. Carbon dioxide concentration
3. Water availability
4. Temperature
5. Presence of chlorophyll
