Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings
Good morning children! Good morning, teacher!
How are you today? We are fine, teacher.
.
I am glad that you are all fine.
2. Prayer
Before we start, let us all stand and let’s pray. (The children will stand up and pray.)
3. Attendance
Is there any absent in the class? None, teacher.
Very Good you are all here.
4. Assignment
Do you have assignment in mathematics? None, teacher.
A. Reviewing Previous Lesson or Presenting the New Lesson
Do you still remember our previous lesson in
mathematics? Yes, teacher.
What is it all about? Our previous lesson is all about Addition teacher.
Excellent!
It is 25, teacher.
Okay, lets add 10 + 15 =?
Good job! Always remember 10 and 15 are what We call it addends, teacher
we call?
Verry good, this are the numbers to be added.
It is the sum, teacher.
How about the 25?
Verry Good!
B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson
Now that you know how to add, let’s have our new
lesson. Are you all excited children? Yes, teacher.
But before that, lets read a story problem. Are you
ready? Yes, teacher.
“One day, John and Jane are rehearsing on stage. “One day, John and Jane are rehearsing on stage.
Later on, they are joined in by Ali, May, Mario, Rey, Later on, they are joined in by Ali, May, Mario, Rey,
and Mark. How many persons in all are practicing and Mark. How many persons in all are practicing
on the stage? on the stage?”
Did you understand the story children? Yes, teacher.
C. Presenting Examples
Now children, I have questions about our story
problem.
What is being asked in the problem? In the problem, “how many persons are practicing
on stage?” is being asked, teacher.
Very good. Now look at this clue word “in all” what
does it mean? Teacher, it means that we need to add.
Great! Now let’s name the given facts. Who are the
children rehearsing on the stage? Teacher, John and Jane are rehearsing on the
stage.
Very good. How many are they? They are 2, teacher.
Great. Who joined John and Jane in the stage? Teacher, Ali, May, Mario, Rey, and Mark joined in
the stage.
Very Good. Now let’s write the number sentence.
2+5=7
Excellent. How many persons in all are practicing
on the stage? Can you add them all?
There are 7 persons in all practicing on the stage,
teacher.
Very Good, children.
D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skill # 1
Our lesson for today is all about Story Problems in
Addition. Are you ready to learn? Yes, teacher.
In solving story problems using addition, it is good
to be familiar with the following clue words.
1. more than
2. plus
3. increase
4. added
5. sum
6. total
7. in all
8. altogether
These words all suggest addition.
What are the clue words for addition again? The clue words for addition are more than, plus,
increase, added, sum, total, in all, and altogether,
teacher.
Very Good. Keep in mind that if we encountered
these kinds of clue words in our problem, it means
that we need to add those given facts. Do you
understand? Yes, teacher.
Alright. Lets have an example.
1
There are three white dogs and five brown dogs
chasing one another in the garage. What is the
total number of dogs in the garage?
What is the clue word, children? The clue word is total, teacher.
Very Good. What does the clue word "total"
suggests? Teacher, it suggests addition.
Excellent. Now, add 3 and 5 what is the total? The total is 8, teacher.
Very good. What are these 8 in the problems? It is the dogs, Teacher.
Alright, we have 8 dogs in total, right children? Yes, Teacher.
Eight ripe mangoes are in the fruit tray. Ellen puts
eight more. How many ripe mangoes are in the fruit
tray?
What is the clue word? Teacher, the clue word is “more”
What the clue word "more" suggests. It is addition, teacher.
Okay, lets add 8 ripe mangoes and 8 more
mangoes. How many mangoes do we have now? There are 16 mangoes, teacher.
Very Good, children.
Liz makes 8 round cakes and 6 rectangular cakes.
How many cakes does she bake in all?
What is being ask? How many cakes does she bake?, teacher.
What are the facts? Teacher, the facts are 8 round cakes and 6
rectangular cakes.
What is the clue word? The clue word is in all, teacher.
In all means? It means that we need to add, teacher.
Very Good. Now let’s add 8 round cakes and 6
rectangular cakes.
8+6=? How many cakes in all? There are 14 cakes, teacher.
Excellent.
Always remember, the steps in solving story
problems in math are as follows:
1. Read and understand the problems.
2. Look for what is being asked.
3. Look for clue words.
4. Name the given facts.
5. Name the number sentence.
6. Check/Double-check your answer.
7. Label your answers.
Do you understand? Yes, teacher.
E. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skill # 2
Now, let’s have a group activity.
I will divide you into 2 groups and each member of
the group will help each other to answer the activity
here in front.
Instruction: Read the following story problems, then
answer the question.
Group 1
"At the picnic, there are 4 apples in the
basket. Then, 3 more apples are added.
How many apples are in the basket
now?"
How many apples are in the basket?
4 apples and 3 apples
added
Using fruit pictures, show the total of the
apples in the basket.
Questions:
a. What is being asked? ___________
b. What are the facts? _____________
c. What is the clue word? __________
Yes, teacher
Group 2
"In the forest, there are 3 rabbits
hopping around. Then, 2 more rabbits How many rabbits are hopping around?
join them. How many rabbits are hopping 3 rabbits and 2 rabbits
around now in all?" In all
Using animal picture, show the total of
the rabbit hopping around.
Questions:
a. What is being asked? ___________
b. What are the facts? _____________
c. What is the clue word? __________
Are you ready for your group activity?
Verry Good! Let’s give Good Job Clap for everyone
children.
F. Developing Mastery
I think you are now ready for your individual
activity.
The pupils of Grade 1-A were asked to
choose their favorite food among the
options: pork, beef, chicken, and
vegetables.
Below is a chart that shows the number of
pupils in Grade 1-A based on their favorite
food.
1. Which food is the most favorite of the
pupils?
2. Which food is the least favorite?
3. How many pupils like pork and beef?
4. The total number of pupils who like to
eat pork and beef is the same as those
who like what kind of food?
5. Which food is the 2nd most favorite?
6. How many pupils are there in all?
G. Finding Practical Application of Concept and Skills in Daily Living
Now children, I have a question.
Do you believe that in every problem there is a
solution? Yes, teacher.
Correct. Keep in mind that in every problem we
encountered even in mathematics there are
possible solution and answer that can help us to
solve the problem. Do you understand? Yes, teacher.
What if it takes time to find answer in the problem?
What will you do? We will not stop to find the answer, teacher.
Alright. We need patience in solving a problem. Do
you understand? Yes, teacher.
H. Making Generalization and Abstraction About the Lesson.
Children, what is our lesson again? Our lesson today is all about Story Problems in
Addition, teacher.
Very Good! What are the word clues that we need
to remember? The clue words are more than, plus, increase,
added, sum, total, in all, and altogether, teacher.
Correct. What does these words suggest? These words suggest that it is addition, teacher.
Very Good. Do you understand our lesson
children? Yes, teacher.
I. Evaluating Learning
Instruction:
J. Additional Activities for Application or Remediation
Instruction: Solve the following story problem.
1. Lucy has 3 apples. Her friend, Mia, gives her 2 more apples. How many apples does Lucy have now?
2. Tom has 4 toy trains. His sister, Lily, gives him 3 more toy trains. How many toy trains does Tom have
now?
3. Sarah has 5 balloons. Her friend, Ben, gives her 2 more balloons for her birthday. How many balloons
