Flange Management Interview Questions
1. What are the different types of flanges?
Ans: Flat face, Weld neck, Slip On, Raised face, Socket weld, Blind.
2. What are the codes and standards used to select flange?
Ans: ASME B16.5 – Pipe flanges & Flanged Fittings (½” – 24”)
ASME B16.47 – Large dia. Flanges (26” – 60”)
ASME B16.1 – Cast Iron Flanges & Flanged fittings
3. What are the codes and standards used to select gasket?
Ans: ASME B16.20 – Standard metallic gaskets (Spiral Wound, Octagonal Ring, Jacketed)
ASME B16.21 - Standard non-metallic gaskets
4. What are the different faces of flange?
Ans: Flat face (Water pipeline, temporary connection)
Raised face (High temp. & Pressure lines)
RTJ Face (Very High Temp & Pressure)
5. What is the height of the face in raised face flange?
Ans: 150# - 1/6” = 4.25mm
>300# - ¼” – 6.35mm
6. What are the types of serration found in the flange face?
Ans: Spiral, Concentric
7. What type of gasket is commonly used in a heat exchanger?
Ans: Metal Jacketed
8. What should be the relative hardness between the RTJ gasket and flange groove?
Ans: Minimum 30 BHN less than the flange
9. Common Alignment Tolerance properties and their values
Ans: Centerline High/Low (CL) – 1.5 mm
Excessive Spacing Gap (GP) – Gasket Thickness X 2
Parallelism (PRL) – 0.8 mm
Rotational Two Hole (RTH) – 3mm
10. What is the purpose of bolt lubrication?
Ans: To prevent sealing issues
Ease of bolt loosening and tightening
To avoid bolt failure
11. What is the bold lubrication is recommended for oxygen service and why it is so?
Ans: Krytox oils and greases because they are chemically inert, thermally stable, and safe for use in all
areas of oxygen service.
12. What is the difference between bolt torqueing and tensioning?
Ans: Torque is the turning force required to spin a nut around the threads of a bolt.
Tension is the stretch or elongation of a bolt that provides the clamping force of a joint.
