SCIENCE QUICK REVISION
REACHING THE AGE OF ADOLESCENCE
1. Adolescence & Puberty:
Adolescence: Period of transition from childhood to adulthood (ages 11–19).
Puberty: Process during which the body undergoes changes to become reproductively
mature.
2. Changes During Puberty:
🔹 Increase in height (rapid growth spurt)
🔹 Change in body shape (boys – muscular, girls – broader hips)
🔹 Voice changes (boys’ voice deepens due to enlarged larynx; Adam’s apple visible)
🔹 Increased sweat & oil gland activity (causes acne)
🔹 Development of secondary sexual characteristics (facial hair in boys, breast development in
girls)
🔹 Maturity of reproductive organs (testes in boys start producing sperms; ovaries in girls start
producing eggs)
3. Hormones & Their Role:
🔹 Hormones: Chemical messengers that regulate body functions.
🔹 Pituitary Gland → Master gland that releases growth hormone & signals puberty.
🔹 Testosterone → Male hormone (triggers changes like facial hair & deep voice).
🔹 Estrogen → Female hormone (triggers breast development & menstrual cycle).
🔹 Thyroxine → Regulates metabolism.
🔹 Insulin → Regulates blood sugar levels.
🔹 Adrenaline → Prepares body for emergencies (‘fight or flight’ response).
4. Menstrual Cycle (VERY IMPORTANT!)
Occurs in females (~28-day cycle).
If the egg is fertilized → pregnancy occurs.
If the egg is unfertilized → uterus lining sheds → Menstruation occurs (lasts 3-7 days).
5. Reproductive Health & Hygiene (🔥 HIGHLY IMPORTANT)
Eat a balanced diet.
Personal hygiene (bathe daily, change undergarments, maintain menstrual hygiene).
Exercise regularly for proper physical & mental health.
Avoid drugs, alcohol, and harmful substances.
6. Sex Determination (EXAM FAVORITE!)
Chromosomes: XY (Male), XX (Female).
Sex of a baby is determined by the father (sperm carries either X or Y chromosome).
