Section E: Case-Based Question (4 marks)
17. Read the following case study and answer the questions below:
Reena and Aman are planning to distribute toffees to children during a school event. Reena
has a bag of toffees that contains only two types: mango and orange. Aman suggests making
small gift packets containing 1 mango and 2 orange toffees or 2 mango and 1 orange toffees
in each. They have 110 toffees in total. Reena recalls that she has 10 more mango toffees
than orange ones.
(a) Let the number of mango toffees be x and orange toffees be y. Write the system of linear
equations representing this situation. (1 mark)
(b) Solve the pair of equations obtained in (a) to find the number of mango and orange
toffees. (2 marks)
(c) How many complete packets of each type can they make if they decide to use all the
toffees without any leftover? (Assume they make equal number of both packet types.) (1
mark)
Additional Long Answer Questions
18. The difference between the squares of two consecutive odd integers is 64. Find the
numbers using the concept of arithmetic progression.
19. A boat goes 24 km downstream and 16 km upstream in 6 hours. It can go 30 km
downstream and 20 km upstream in 7 hours. Find the speed of the boat in still water and
the speed of the stream.
