ELECTIVES FEEDBACK
DOCUMENT

NOTE : The feedback is completely based on the reviews and responses received from students.
BREADTHS

Econometric analysis (HS30033)

Very lenient grading, the syllabus covers fundamental topics of ML and
Stats. It's a little bit of a difficult course, requiring time; not much can be
understood in class due to the large syllabus. It is beneficial for the
students who are planning to go into data in the future. It is a very
competitive course, and you have to score nearly full marks in Midterms,
Finals, and tests to get an EX or even an A.

Economics (HS21201)
Heavily depends on the professor teaching the course; it's not recommended for
someone who isn't interested in the finance side. It's good for someone who
enjoys finance. Grading is a bit difficult but still depends on the professor
teaching the course. The course is quite alright and has good insights. It is taught
by two teachers: one for microeconomics and another for macroeconomics. For
micro, the course generally follows the book, so it has to be covered side by side.
You can generally devote just 1 hour a day to this in class. The microeconomics
instructor is strict.

Electromagnetic engineering (EC21206)

The professor was chill, but I expected to learn the basics of electromagnetic
propagation, like antennas. However, the coursework could not reach that level,
and it was a little boring. The professor deserves every respect for the efforts he
made.

EP essentials (EP61201)
Absolute grading, majority numerical, theory tough but PYQs are really helpful .
English as a Second Language
(HS13005)
Very easy course , nothing is mandatory except attendance. Any course by
Dripta Mam is a good. The professor is very [Link] is a linguistic
course and it expects you to more technical than yap a lot unlike other HS
Breadths where you have to yap a lot. You can easily cover the syllabus a day
before exam.

Fluid Mechanics (ME21201)

Decent grading, regular assignments make it easy to revise during midterms
and finals; concepts can be understood in class itself. Attendance carries marks,
and the final exam is usually tough; some topics may be hard to grasp.
Suggestions: Follow classes and do not keep backlogs in concepts.

General Management (BM700003)

It's quite easy, actually. And for students interested in consulting, it would be a
must-take.

Introduction to Human Behaviour in Organization

(BM40004)
Subject is initially interesting but includes too much theory later, and attending
classes is important to grasp topics as the proper notes are not present
anywhere.
German (HS30048)
Attending all classes will help, just regularly practicing in Duolingo will
[Link] easy course, provided attendance is a must to all classes. One can
easily score A and EX. Almost all the questions from pyqs are repeated in
sem exams.
Attendance quite chill (proxy could be marked easily)
Class notes provided by prof easy grading Previous year question repeat
New language, so need to understand from the beginning
If you don't attend classes then you might stuck understanding

INFORMATION AND SYSTEM SECURITY

(CS60112)
The course teaches in depth on various security aspects from web to software.
It is taught in detail and depth.
If someone is very new to this field, or if anyone is not aware with the concepts
of computer and internet, they shouldn't take this course as they will find it very
difficult
CTF assignments could be improved. By improvement I meant on the
conducting part.

Introduction to Financial Management

(BM40002)
Great course for beginners looking to explore the field of finance. Equal
distribution in corporate & personal finance, with special focus on investments &
loans. You will score good(A-EX) if you love finance and already know a bit of it
like investing valuations interest etc.70-80% questions in exam were pyqs with
different numbers and values. Those examples were taught in class. Easy course
if we attend class and make not s, do pyqs.
INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN PSYCHOLOGY
(HS60005)
Attendance: Above 90%
Internal: 1 group assignments; multiple short assignments- they are given during
the class hours (so high attendance is beneficial to submit all of them)
Mid-sem and End-sem: Simple questions, but the answers need to be very
detailed and relevant to the subject material.
Grading: Easy to get B and above

Introduction to social psychology (HS21221)

Course is like a typical hss breadth, completely logical theory and easy course
content.
Benefits is that its less loaded as compared to other breadth options, however
the grade heavily depends on attendance factor and class performances
making it bit hectic sometimes. The prof is also chill, but attendance and class
participation makes it not a best hss breadth, there are better options from this.
You have to be present in almost all classes in this Course and be interactive
with the Professor, as about 40% of marks are based on class activities and
attendance.
It is a pretty good course on getting an idea about human psychology and you
also get to know a lot about your own personality traits in this course. You make
your own unique reflection journal.
Some cons that I can think of are, too much emphasis on attendance, the
marking scheme in exams is pretty different from the normative pattern.
Grading is also bad if you’re looking for A or EX as most people got Either B or C
grade even after attending 80-90% of the classes.
Material science (MS31007)
The evaluation is so hard, due to so many loaded topics studying this course was
difficult even grades are not good , we cannot study effectively and Professor
was so strict , I will suggest if you want a good grade in breadth I won't suggest
this breadth course. The topics should be reduced.

Mathematical Statistic (MA40248)

Too Easy Exactly same as PnS , and easier as it is meant for MSc Students.
Surprise mini tests are there in class for attendance and accounts for 20%
(roughly 7-8 tests) but the performance doesn't matter just have to [Link]'s
mostly the same as PnS, maybe a bit easier! Even those who have done PnS in
third semester may consider having this if you have excelled in PnS (then it will
just be a free 3 credit EX). But knowing Statistics is extremely important, so
those who don't have PnS in core, should consider this course.
There's a little load of attendance, but not so much that it becomes a problem.
In Spring 2025, both mid and end term were easy, easier than PnS tutorials. And
the best thing of all - there are literally NO CTs! You just have to make a small
project, which is to conduct a Statistical Analysis of any small dataset related to
IIT Kharagpur. That's it. Have a reasonable attendance, practise a little, make the
project (4-5 pages are enough). And you'll also have an extremely strong
foundation for Data and ML, even if you didn't do PnS!Pros: Literally 90% same
syllabus as Probability and Statistics.(might change from next sem) Easier paper
than P and S. Easier competition than P and S.(it's an MSc course and those
dudes aren't that sharp)
Cons: Attendance marks matter a lot.(Paper submissions are just attendance)
Nothing new to learn. Can just go through P and S notes a week before the
exams and score well.
Modern Algebra (MA21202)
If you like studying mathematics then you should take this course.
It was the best course among all the courses I have studied so far.
It is a difficult course but very [Link] is absolute.

Modernisation and creative

communication (HS30075)
Just need to prepare one day before exam. Study materials are provided by the
professor.
Cons-checking of answers sheets is random by TAs some may get good marks
some may not but maximum student get good [Link] not so good
Professor doesn't teach much There were only around 6 7 hrs of classes in total
Overall Chill course but not so good grading

Paninian Grammar from computational

perspective (KS20203)

Teacher won't bother about the attendance much, he has only checked once(in
our time). Coming to the course, you have to study a bit, you need to understand
and remember the sanskrit related words, you can't be like questions will come
from the pyqs, you need to study and go through all the materials sir has
provided, and there will a presentation, topics will be given and you need to
chose any one of the topic and 4-5 members team. The course is not so boring if
you actually listen to the professor, you may not be able to work properly if you
don't attend the classes or if you don't listen to the professor
Quantum physics (PH21206)
The course is very low scoring. I got 12.5/30 in mid sem and less than 35/50 in
end sem but still got A because 2nd year physics and chemistry students are
not very skilled.

Prof Sumadra Kumar Roy is a good teacher. He takes attendance everyday after
midsem only, but I don't know if there are marks for it because there will be 2
class tests in CIC which are easy I think.

Prerequisites:-
1. There was a very small topic of crompton effect which required knowledge of
special theory of relativity, which is not a big issue.
2. Maths:- the course requires some knowledge of linear algebra (eigenvector
related things) and probability (basic only) which can be easily learnt with small
practice.
3. There will be some revision of concepts studied in class 11 and 12 but you don't
need to separately practice for it.
4. In exam I got one question related to rotational moment of inertia. It will
unfair for those who didn't know mechanics.

Some questions in exam will not be straight forward.

One important thing is that as per common belief, this subject is something
conceptually very tough to understand, and I most of my time on that prior to
mid sem. This was the reason why it went bad. If you prioritize marks, then
solving zettili questions would increase the chances.
Sociology of Economic Development
(HS30057)
It's a good course if you are interested in social science. It's a low-effort subject.
Most part is of learning.
Grading was fine but not as it was expected. I expected an EX but got an A even
after getting very decent marks and participating in group discussions and
presentations.
You can go for it ig you are having some interest in the subject and if you can
learn things.

SOCIOLOGY OF SCIENCE (HS40072)

NOT SO GOOD FOR ME ,EVEN,IT WAS TAUGHT GREATLY BUT I DO LATE
REGISTRATION,MANAGE TO GET P,ATTEMPT CLASS TEST 2,KRISH MY
FRIEND WAS TOPPER,FRIDAY 8 AM CLASS ,I APOLOGIZE FROM MAM
REGARDING THIS LATELY ,BUT STILL NOT KNOW WHETHER I WAS PARDON
OR NOT ,BY THIS CHANNEL I BEG SORRY TO MAM AND WISHING BEST FOR
HER,ONE GOOD THING WAS BY PROJECTOR STUDYING

URBAN SOCIOLOGY (HS60084)

Attendance: Recommended above 80%
Internal: 2 simple MCQ based class tests; 1 simple group assignment
Mid-sem and End-sem: Easy questions but the overall paper is quite lengthy
Grading: Easy to get B and above.
DEPTHS

ALGORITHMS LAB (CS29203)

Done just to complete credits of minor in cse, its a good course, one can do it to
have hands on in coding from scratch, might be helpful in cdc too
The grading is bit on off side though, but having it as additional will not affect
your cgpa

DYNAMICS OF SOILS AND FOUNDATION (CE60216)

Attendance: No attendance policy
Internal: 2 class tests. Best one out of these two will be used
Mid-sem: Simple questions, very similar to the questions discussed in class
End-sem: Slightly lengthy questions, questions will be similar to those discussed
in the class
Grading: Easy to get A and above

GRAPHICAL AND GENERATIVE MODELS OF ML

(AI60201)
A difficult course, very difficult for someone not having knowledge of ML basics. Not
recommended for someone who wants to learn the topic through course. Grading too
is bit on off side. You can opt for it if you want to complete your micro specialisation.

OBJECT ORIENTED SYSTEM DESIGN (CS40017)

Easy course, covers all OOP concepts in Java. Suggestions: should include a
project.
PROCESS PLANT OPERATIONS AND SAFETY
(CH42010)
No attendance. Slides provided by profs. Mostly theoretical, few numericals as
well.

STATISTICAL AND MACHINE LEARNING METHODS

IN WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING (CE60252)
The course starts with basic concepts of probability, distributions , Copula (main
emphasis is given on this topic by professor), correlation coefficients, Machine
learning and deep learning (basic theory). If you regularly go to classes, then you
wont face any difficulty during exams. Professor is very friendly (Prof Rajib
Maity).
One assignment and one term project will be given after midsem , which will
carry around a total of 30 marks. It will be a bit challenging to grasp the concept
of Copula in classes.

THERMAL PHYSICS (PH21004)

I'm from instrumentation engineering branch and I've chosen thermal physics
as depth elective. I don't want to comment on any course but I have to say that
the elective options that are available are limited and I've chosen better of
everything available. It's like im not choosing what I like for an [Link]
it's a compulsion I've chosen some random course which I have no interest on
because the remaining were even worse(Not the course but my interest in
them).Firstly you should not ask for a course feedback because it's like any other
course suppose for example for me it's Thermal [Link] second year it's their
major course right. You are not asking them about the course feedback right ?
The problem is options which are very limited .
