Setting up an RSS service
We’re going to walk you through a quick setup of an RSS service called Feedly just as an example of
how quick and easy it can be. Feedly is a web based RSS service. You go to [Link] and sign
up (you’ll need a Google account – e.g. a Gmail address – to do this, although you can also use
certain social networking sites to log in, e.g. via Facebook).
Feedly will recommend a whole lot of news sources – blogs and topics – for you to subscribe to in a
whole lot of different categories. You can choose the sites you want to read. You can also add any
sites of your own (i.e. not specifically recommended by Feedly) simply by adding their URLs. Feedly
will check if each site has an RSS feed and, if it does, it will allow you to add it to your subscriptions.
And that’s it. Each time you access Feedly, you will see a list of articles from all the sites you
subscribe to. The articles at the top will be the new, unread ones, and as you scroll down the list,
some articles will be marked as read. All you would need to do to see the full article is click on the
headline.
The nice thing about using a service such as Feedly is that
it is accessible from a web browser if you prefer to work that way
if you prefer to use an app it has multiple apps available for just about all kinds of devices
it presents an ‘easy to scan’ headline type of view of all articles from all the sites you subscribe
to – all on a single page
it can be set to automatically mark a headline as ‘seen’ when you scroll past it
you can bookmark articles that are interesting that you want to re-read.
it allows you to share articles using Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, Google Plus and many other
services quickly and easily
all these features are synced between devices and the web so that your experience is seamless.
(For example, if you read an article on your smartphone, that article will still be marked as ‘read’
when you access the service from a different device, like a laptop.)
Now you have no excuse for not keeping up to date with tech news!
