Spring-Mass System Modeling Assignment

The assignment due on January 25, 2024, includes exercises on modeling a coupled spring-mass system, deriving differential equations, and analyzing second-order systems in mechanical and electrical contexts. Students are required to identify mechanical and electrical parameters, understand their impacts through simulations, and linearize a nonlinear device function. Specific exercises focus on differentiating between system parameters and their representations in transfer functions.

Assignment 1

Due on January 25, 2024, at 2h45 pm

Exercise 1: Modelling
A coupled spring-mass system is shown below:

Obtain the differential equations describing the system.

Exercise 2: Modelling, block diagram, and transfer function

Exercise 3: Second order system
We have modelled in class:
 a mechanical system composed of a mass, a spring, and a damper, mounted horizontally.
 an electric circuit composed of a voltage source in series with a resistance, an inductance, and a
capacitor.

Mass, spring, and damper mounted horizontally voltage source in series with resistance,
inductance, and capacitance
Parameters: M, K, and b Parameters: R, L, and C

Additionally, we have simulated the following second-order system with unit-step input:

3.1 Identify, term by term, the mechanical parameters M, K, and b with those of the second-order
system
Pay attention: the spring constant K representing the stiffness is not the gain K appearing in the numerator
of the second-order system transfer function. To avoid ambiguity, rename the spring constant K S
3.2 Identify, term by term, the electrical parameters R, L, and C with those of the second-order system
Skip questions 3.3 and 3.4
3.3 Using the simulation file, understand the impact of M, K, and b on the position x of the
mechanical system.
3.4 Using the simulation file, understand the impact of R, L, and C on the capacitor voltage v c of the
electrical system.
Exercise 4:
A nonlinear device is represented by the function:
y = f(x) = x1/2
where the operating point for the input x is at x 0 = 1/2.
Linearize the system around x0
