Set 9 Solutions: Statics & Mechanics

The document contains solutions to various problems related to statics and mechanics of materials, specifically focusing on shear stress, angle of twist, and torque in solid shafts made of steel and other materials. Each problem outlines specific parameters such as material properties, dimensions, and loading conditions to determine maximum shearing stress, rotations, and allowable torques. The problems are designed for students at McMaster University and are structured to enhance understanding of mechanical behavior under torsional loads.

1. The solid circular steel (G = 80 GPa) has a diameter

of 80 mm. If the gears are spaced at 1.25 m intervals, determine;
(a) The maximum shearing stress in the shaft.
(b) The rotation of a section at D with respect to a
section at B.
(c) The rotation of a section at E with respect to a
section at A.

2. The torques shown are exerted on pulleys A, B, C, and D. Knowing

that each shaft is solid, determine (a) the shaft in which the maximum
shearing stress occurs, (b) the magnitude of that stress. Knowing that
each shaft is 120 mm long and made of steel (G = 77 GPa), determine
the angle of twist between: (a) A and C, (b) A and E.

3. The assembly is made of A-36 steel and consists of a

solid rod 15 mm in diameter connected to the inside of a
tube using a rigid disk at B. Determine the angle of twist at
A. The tube has an outer diameter of 30 mm and wall
thickness of 3 mm [G = 77 GPa]

4. Two solid steel shafts are connected by the gears shown. Determine
the maximum shearing stress in each shaft when a 600-Nm torque T is
applied at A. Determine the angle through which end A rotates when a
600 Nm torque T is applied at A [G = 77 GPa].

5. The angle of rotation of end A of the gear-and-shaft system shown in

the figure must not exceed 4°. Knowing that the shafts are made of steel
for which the allowable shear stress τall = 65 MPa, and the Shear
Modulus G = 80 GPa, determine the largest torque T, which may be
applied at end A. Note that the centerline to centerline distances
between the bearing supports shown are 600 mm.

6. A solid circular steel (G = 80 GPa) shaft is fastened

securely to a solid circular bronze (G = 40 GPa) shaft, as
indicated in Fig. 6. The allowable shearing stress is 70
MPa, and the maximum allowable angle of twist in the
3.5 m length is 0.04 rad. Determine the maximum
allowable value of T.

torsional loadings shown. Determine the required diameter d of the
shaft if the allowable shear stress for the material is τallow = 175 MPa.

8. If the solid shaft AB to which the valve handle is attached is

made of C83400 red brass, determine the smallest diameter of
the handle so that the angle of twist does not exceed 0.5° and
the shear stress does not exceed 40 MPa when F = 25 N
[assume G = 77 GPa, though G for brass is different]

9. The solid spindle AB has a diameter ds = 45 mm and is made of a

steel with G = 77 GPa and τall = 80 MPa, while sleeve CD is made of
a brass with G = 38 GPa and τall = 50 MPa. Determine: (a) the largest
torque T which may be applied at A if the given allowable stresses are
not to be exceeded and if the angle of twist of sleeve CD is not to
exceed 0.375°, (b) the corresponding angle through which end A will
rotate.
