Types of Assembly Drawings Explained

Assembly drawings are technical drawings that illustrate how multiple components fit together, often including instructions, part lists, and specifications. They can be created by hand or using CAD software and come in various types, such as general assembly, exploded assembly, installation, schematic, and machine shop drawings. These drawings ensure clarity and consistency in the assembly process, adhering to industry standards.

Assembly drawings are a type of technical drawing used

to represent items that consist of more than one
component. They show how those components fit together
and may be in the form of, orthogonal plans, sections and
elevations, or three-dimensional views.

Assembly drawings might include instructions, lists of

component parts, reference numbers, references to detail
drawings or shop drawings, and specification information.
They may also include dimensions, notation and symbols. It
is important that these are consistent with industry
standards so that their precise meaning is clear and can be
understood.

Assembly drawings may be drawn to scale by hand, or

prepared using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
However, increasingly, building information modelling
(BIM) is being used to create 3 dimensional
representations of buildings and their components.

1. General assembly drawings

General assembly drawings provide a comprehensive

visual representation of how all components of a product
or system fit together in their final assembled form.

2. Exploded assembly drawing

These technical drawings show the components of an

assembly slightly separated or suspended in space in the
assembly sequence.
This “exploded” view clarifies how the final product will fit
together, making it easier to understand even for a
layperson.

3. Installation drawings

Installation drawings help workers with the erection or

assembly of a product.

They supply information on how a component will be

positioned in relation to its supporting or adjacent elements.

It will also show parts, dimensional data, hardware

descriptions, and a general configuration.

4. Schematic assembly drawings

A schematic drawing is a simplified illustration of

components using standardized symbols and lines.
Schematic diagrams include only necessary details.

The machine shop drawings are for the machinist or

machine operator. Because this person is unconcerned
about information related to the previous stages or
operations, only the information about the machined part’s
function is included in the part drawing.
