Project Title: E-Waste Management and Recycling System
1. Introduction
1.1 Background
Electronic waste (e-waste) is a growing problem in Kenya, with many people improperly disposing of
old phones, computers, and other electronic devices. This leads to environmental pollution and
health risks. A digital e-waste management system will help connect users with recycling centers,
allowing proper disposal and even resale of usable parts.
1.2 Purpose
The purpose of this project is to create a web-based e-waste management system that allows users
to register and locate the nearest e-waste collection centers, schedule pickups, and learn about
proper disposal methods.
2. Input - Processing - Output (IPO) Model
2.1 Input
• User enters details of the e-waste (type, quantity, condition).
• User selects whether to drop off or request a pickup.
• Admin or recycling center updates status of collected e-waste.
2.2 Processing
• System verifies the nearest collection points based on user location.
• System schedules and notifies users of pickup times.
• System categorizes e-waste for recycling or resale.
2.3 Output
• Display of available e-waste collection centers.
• Confirmation of pickup schedule via SMS/email.
• Admin dashboard with analytics on collected e-waste.
3. Problem Statement
In Kenya, e-waste disposal is largely unregulated, leading to pollution and missed recycling
opportunities. Many people do not know where to dispose of old electronics properly. This project
will provide a digital solution to manage e-waste collection efficiently.
4. Objectives
• To develop a user-friendly web-based e-waste management system.
• To connect users with certified e-waste recycling centers.
• To provide pickup scheduling for convenience.
• To promote awareness about proper e-waste disposal.
5. Scope
5.1 Users
• Individuals & Businesses: Can register, locate drop-off points, or request pickup.
• Recycling Centers & Admins: Can track e-waste collections and manage pickups.
5.2 Functionalities
• User registration and login.
• E-waste drop-off or pickup request.
• Integration with location services for nearby collection centers.
• SMS/email notifications for pickup confirmations.
• Admin dashboard for managing collections.
5.3 Technologies Used (Simple & Kenya-Friendly)
• Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript (Bootstrap for UI).
• Backend: PHP with Laravel (recommended) or [Link] with [Link].
• Database: MySQL (widely supported in Kenya).
• APIs: Google Maps API (for location services), Twilio/Africa’s Talking (for SMS).
6. System Design
• Use Case Diagram → Shows interactions between users and recycling centers.
• Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD) → Defines relationships between users, e-waste, and
collection centers.
• Data Flow Diagram (DFD) → Illustrates how data moves through the system.
7. Implementation Plan
1. Requirement Gathering → Understand user needs and technical requirements.
2. System Design → Create wireframes, ERD, and DFD.
3. Development → Code the frontend and backend.
4. Testing → Conduct system testing and debugging.
5. Deployment → Host the system for public use.
6. Maintenance → Regular updates and security fixes.
8. Expected Outcomes
• A functional e-waste management system that connects users with recycling centers.
• Increased awareness and proper disposal of electronic waste.
• A reduction in environmental pollution caused by e-waste.
• An organized tracking system for recycling centers.
9. Conclusion
This E-Waste Management and Recycling System will provide an effective digital solution for
disposing of electronic waste in Kenya. By promoting responsible recycling, it will help protect the
environment while also benefiting businesses and individuals looking for proper e-waste disposal
options.
