Paper–MMATH–20–204
Time allowed : 3 Hours] [Maximum Marks : 80
Note : Attempt five questions in all, selecting one question
from each unit. Question No. 9 is compulsory. All
questions carry equal marks.
UNIT–I
1. Define Lebesgue outer measure. Prove that outer measure
of an interval equals its length. Also show that
intersection of a finite number of measurable sets is
measurable.
2. Define Borel Measurable sets. Give some examples of
Borel sets. Prove that every Borel set in R is measurable.
UNIT–II
3. (a) Let f be an extended real valued function defined on
a measurable set E. Then following statements are
equivalent.
(i) E (f > a) is a measurable for all a Î R
(ii) E (f ³ a) is a measurable for all a Î R
(iii) E (f < a) is a measurable for all a Î R
(iv) E (f £ a) is a measurable for all a Î R.

(b) Let f be a function defined on a measurable set E. (iii) A measurable function f is integrable over a set E iff
Then f is measurable iff for any open set G in | f | is integrable over E.

Rf (G) is a measurable set. (iv) Let f be non-negative measurable function. Show
.f
4. (a) State and prove Egoroff’s theorem. that f = 0 a.e. on E iff ò E = 0.
(b) State and prove Lusin’s theorem. (v) Let f(x) = | x |. Find all Dini’s derivatives. Is f(x) is
UNIT-III differentiable at x = 0.

(b) State and prove Lebsesgue convergence theorem. indefinite integral F of f is absolutely continuous on
[a, b].
UNIT-IV
7. Define Dini derivatives and show that they always exists
for a function. State and prove Vitali’s covering lemma.
8. Define Lp space and discuss completeness in detail.
Compulsory Question
9. Attempt all questions:
(i) Define characteristic function cA of the set A. The
characteristic function cA is measurable iff A is
measurable.
(ii) Let { fi } be a sequence of measurable function
defined on the some measurable set. Then sup1£i£n fi
is measurable for each n.
