LESSON 1
My Computer - IPO Cycle and Devices
A. Objective type questions
1. IPO cycle stands for Input – Process – Output.
2. An input device that has many keys to enter text and numbers
is keyboard.
3. The Control Unit interprets the data and instructions received as input.
4. The three parts of a CPU are: CU, ALU, and PU. False.
5. LCD stands for Liquid Central Display. False.
B. Answer the following.
1. Explain IPO cycle with an example.
Answer: - Input-Process-Output is known as the IPO cycle.
The data and instructions are fed to the computer. These instructions are
called input.
The CPU of the computer processes these instructions.
The result generated by the computer is known as the output. It may be in
the form of a visual (text, number, or image), sound (audio), or video.
Example: Getting a shirt stitched.
Input: Cloth, thread, buttons, etc.
Process: Stitching
Output: Final Shirt
2. Give two examples each of input and output devices.
Answer:-
Examples of input devices (any two): Keyboard, mouse, web camera,
microphone, scanner, touchpad, joystick, and stylus.
Examples of output devices (any two): Monitor, printer, speaker,
projector, and plotter.
3. Name the different parts of a CPU and briefly explain their functions.
Answer: - Three parts of a CPU are Control Unit (CU), Memory Unit
(MU), and Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU)
Control Unit: It controls the functioning of the computer system as well
as its different parts. It reads the input and sends it to ALU or MU as
required.
Memory Unit: It is where the CPU stores all the data and instructions it
receives, and also the output temporarily. This data is saved in computer
memory permanently when the user instructs.
Arithmetic and Logic Unit: It performs arithmetic and logical functions.
4. List the similarities between the CPU of a computer and the human brain.
Answer: - The similarities are as follows:
i. The CPU has a memory just like human brain.
ii. Just like the human brain sends and receives messages from
different parts of the body, a CPU receives input and sends output
to different parts of a computer.
iii. Just as the human brain observes its surrounding environment,
processes the information, and acts accordingly, the CPU processes
the instruction and information that it receives as input and provides
the output accordingly.
iv. Just as a human brain can solve mathematical and logical problems
by using the concepts stored in its memory, the CPU can also
function similarly.
