Tutorial 10
(1) Two dice are rolled, find the probability of the following events
a) A : Sum is equal to 1 b) B : Sum is equal to 4
c) C : Sum is less than 13. d) D : Sum is amultiple of 3
Which pair of these events are mutually exclusive and exhaustive ?
Ans: a) 0 , b) 1/12 , c) 1.
(2) A die is rolled and a coin is tossed, find the probability that the die
shows an odd number and the coin shows a head
(3) A bag I contains 4 white and 6 black balls while another Bag II
contains 4 white and 3 black balls. One ball is drawn at random
from one of the bags, and it is found to be black. Find the prob-
7
ability that it was drawn from Bag I. (Ans: 12 ) Hint: Use Bayes rule.
(4) Define random variable, discrete and continuous random variables
giving five examples of each.
(5) Discuss the differences between discrete variables and continuous
variables with appropriate examples.
(6) A new board game uses an eight-sided die. Suppose the die is rolled
once, what is the probability of getting
a) an even number ?
b) a number less than or equal to 5?
c) an even number greater than 5?
(7) Let X be the number of years before a certain kind of pump needs
replacement. Let X have the probability function f (x) = kx3 , x =
0, 1, 2, 3, 4. Find k.
(8) Let X (millimeters) be the thickness of washers. Assume that X has
the density f (x) = kx if 1.9 < x < 2.1 and 0 otherwise. Find k.
What is the probability that a washer will have thickness between
1.95 mm and 2.05 mm?
1
(9) Find the probability that none of the of 3 bulbs in a traffic signal
must be replaced during the first 1.2 hours of operation if the prob-
ablity that a bulb must be replaced is a random variable X with
density (
6 0.25 − (x − 1.5)2 1 ≤ x ≤ 2
f (x) =
0 otherwise
(10) Suppose that certain bolts have length L
= 200 +2 X mm where x is
3(1 − x )
−1 ≤ x ≤ 1
a random variable with density f (x) = 4
0 otherwise
Determine c so that with aprobability of 95% a bolt will have any
length between 200 − c and 200 + c.
