4.1 Introduction
This Section of Report pertains to priliminary design of Cast-in Situ post tensioned five span
continuous box girders in Etihad Rail Project. The superstructure will be integral with the portal
beam which caters 1 tracks typically. Loads from the portal beam are transferred to the pier
thorugh mechanical bearings
Priliminary design of structure is performed for 2x30m to be on conservative side. Design is done
using the standards recommended in AREMA Code.

a) Self weight of all the structural components shall be calculated by Program
Matrial Properties of concrete elements are as below
Grade Fck,Cylin Fck,Cube g E
Mpa Mpa kN/m3 Gpa Table 3.1 of EN 1992-1-1
Superstructure C45 45 55 25.0 36.0
Portal Beam C50 50 60 25.0 37.0
Unit Weight of Wearing coat = 23.0 kN/m3
Unit Weight of Reinforced Steel = 78.5 kN/m3
Unit Weight of Pretensioned Steel = 78.5 kN/m3
Unit Weight of soil = 20.0 kN/m3
Unit Weight of Water = 10.0 kN/m3

4.3.2 Superimposed dead load

Ballast = 36.9 kN/m
Ballast Wall/Utilities = 13.96 kN/m
Track Rails = 3.00 kN/m

4.3.3 Vertical Live Load

COOPER E80
Recommended Liveload for the design of supersrtuctre as per AREMA code is Cooper E80 with axle loads and spacing
as given below. For details of E80 vehicle Cl:2.2.3 (c) of AREMA Code can be referred

Length of train = 31.20 m

4.3.4 Impact Load (Not Considered for Substructure & Foundation design)
Freight Railway (AREMA)

Impact factor f = 125/L0.5

L = 28.30
\ f = 1.235

4.3.5 Longitudinal Load (resulting from braking and traction) Cl 2.2.3 ( j ) of AREMA

Freight Railway (Max P & Max MT Case)

Braking Force = 625 kN = 20.8 kN/m @ 2.45m R.T.L

Traction Force = 775 kN = 25.8 kN/m @ 0.90m R.T.L

Freight Railway (Max ML Case)

Braking Force = 363 kN = 24.2 kN/m @ 2.45m R.T.L

Traction Force = 548 kN = 36.5 kN/m @ 0.90m R.T.L

4.3.6 Transverse Forces

Nosing Force
Concentrated force = 90 kN @ R.T.L

4.3.7 Centrifugal Force

Centrifugal force is calculated for radius of 300m. It has been applied as uniform transverse load on the superstructure.
Concentrated force = 62 kN @ R.T.L
Height of this force from top of piercap = 2.45 m above TOR

4.3.8 Thermal Loads

a) Uniform Temperatures
0
Temperature rise = 30.00 C
0
Temperature fall = -30.00 C

b) Differential Temperatures

Differential temperature is applied as per 3.12.3 of AASHTO LRFD.

4.3.9 Differential Settlement

A settlement of 5mm is applied considering full young modulus of concrete.
