1 Scope and purpose
This Group Standard regulates the uniform and consistent procedure for identification and traceability of products and
their intermediate state.
This Group Standard is applicable for all BMW Group products in their final and intermediate conditions up to the sub-
supplier chain for raw materials.
The BMW Group is obliged to record and document the products with suitable means where reasonable. The current
regulations of national authorities, such as the KBA (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, Germany), ASQIQ (Administration of
Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, People's Republic of China) or NHTSA (National Highway Traffic
Administration, USA) shall be considered. Further requirements arise from current standards such as
DIN EN ISO 9001.
The BMW Group is obliged as an OEM to delimit and report the products within the deadlines specified by the
legislation after determining that a technical campaign is relevant to safety or homologation.
This Group Standard describes the minimum requirement. The responsible specialist department can define higher
standards of traceability at any time. Requirements shall be implemented as soon as possible with economically
justifiable costs.

4.2 Terms
Operator The operators are the specialist departments who use and maintain the tools and
systems provided by planning. The operators assign tasks to and manage the
employees required for production.
PNW 1 Production Network 1 comprises the plant network of the primary plants and partner
plants. They produce CBU vehicles for the global market.
PNW 2 Production network 2, previously CKD involves management and operation of the
plants India, Thailand, Russia, Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia and Egypt (status end of
2016). It is an instrument for tapping new growing markets which restrict the import of
CBU vehicles due to high import duties and taxes. Local vehicle production enables an
early presence in these markets and form the basis for market entry of the BMW
brand.
Product examples: Automobiles, motorcycles, lifestyle products, engines, spare parts,
accessories, components in final and intermediate state, customer functions and
services (including software), consumables, assembly tools
Product ID The product ID is a unique series of characters (figures and/or letters), which enables
the exact identification of a product, e.g. VIN for vehicles, engine serial number for
engines, sequence number for modular JIS call-offs.
Production lot A production lot starts with the first piece approval and ends with the last part.
A production lot is a defined quantity of a product (either initial product, intermediate or
end product) that has uniform characteristics and was manufactured in one production
cycle without interruption (one material batch). A production batch has the following
features:
− produced in one operation or in one specific part of a continuous process;
− certain quantity of materials produced using the same basic materials and under the
same conditions for which a uniform characteristics and quality is aimed for within
the specified limits is intended and can be regarded as homogeneous.
Production release With the production release, the completion of development work is confirmed,
including the presentation of legally valid product documentation (e.g. CA models,
drawings, validation results).
Production lot synonymous with production batch
Quality circle The Quality circle (QK) bears responsibility for decision-making for divisional,
departmental, and customer-process-spanning quality topics with an effect on
company activities, with a veto right and legal claim as a customer advocate. The QK is
the preparation group for all committee topics with regard to quality and customer
orientation and gives clear decision recommendations to the VA-O and in the directors'
meeting (VS).
Serial/part number In accordance with GS 91010-1 and GS 91010-2, the serial or part number contains
the time of production of a component and specifications regarding the assembly site
and manufacturer. Together with the part number and the change index, the
component and its origin can be clearly identified. The serial number definition is valid
only for such items that are not already regulated elsewhere. These items shall be
agreed separately with the respective planning departments.

5 General information
As a general rule, all products of the BMW Group are subject to the principle of traceability, in their final state and
intermediate state, down to the raw material.
The traceability of products and their intermediate states in vehicles shall be ensured as of the PVL build-phase at the
latest.
In case of contradictory requirements between GS 90036 and GS 95017, the higher requirement shall apply for the
products concerned.
6 Responsibilities
The traceability class from this Group Standard is determined by the BMW specialist departments issuing the release
in collaboration with the SE Team/BE Team in the course of risk management. The applicable regulations are listed
in section 9. The final decision lies with the specialist department issuing the release.
During production release, the correct specification of the serial number (e.g. execution, dimension, position) and/or
batch number shall be ensured by the BMW specialist departments issuing the release. The requirements for labelling
from GS 91001, GS 91004 and for machine-readable identification from GS 91010-1 or GS 91010-2 shall be
observed in this process.
For products that are not classified in the course of risk management, e.g. locally produced products in PNW 2 or
accessories and lifestyle products, the traceability classification shall be defined by the specialist department for part
releases based on the regulations described in Table 1.
The BTRV generics BMW Motorrad is defined by the releasing departments in collaboration with the SE teams.

8 Traceability classes
8.1 Subdivision into traceability classes
In order to be able to delimit the products and their intermediate states according to the product and process risk,
they are divided into various classes for component traceability (BTRV):
− BTRV_A = traceability class A;
− BTRV_B = traceability class B.
These classes are not to be confused with the classification of the risk management.
8.2 Component traceability with serial number - traceability class A
The BTRV_A requires that the product be marked with a continuous serial number (product ID) to ensure the clear
assignment of the installed product in the next-higher installation condition (e.g. airbag module to vehicle).
NOTE In PNW 2 the products for serial documentation are implemented taking into account the planned production
volume and locally existing IT infrastructure.
In PNW 2 batch limitation via the so-called lots or delivery note number is permitted instead of serial documentation.
See section 8.3.
8.2.1 Marking
Products of the BTRV_A shall be marked with at least the following information:
− part number;
− change index;
− serial number or JIS order number.
The products shall be marked according to GS 91001, GS 91004, GS 91010-1 and GS 91010-2. Other methods are
allowed in coordination with the BMW planning departments responsible (e.g. for use of RFID or if the maximum daily
volume provided in the serial number is insufficient).
The design of the marking (e.g. barcode, data matrix code), whose means of application (e.g. label, print, or embossing)
and positioning on the product shall be documented in the specifications (e.g. drawing) by the BMW specialist
department issuing the release.
The manufacturer (e.g. purchased part supplier or in-house parts production) of the product shall ensure the design
of the marking according to specifications and consistent documentation of the following information for each
manufactured product:
− batch or serial number of subcomponents used;
− measurement and quality data (including test status);
− machines used (e.g. lines, testers);
− relevant process data of the machines used;
− time and place of manufacture;
− any reworking/repairs performed.
8.2.2 Data logging
The data is logged via reading procedures or, as far as possible, via E/E diagnostic procedures in production. The exact
method shall be agreed with the interface partners responsible.
The operator (e.g. assembly) shall record
− the part number, the change index, and the serial number, or
− JIS order number and delivery date
and assign them to the subsequent product in which the product is installed.
The following information is required for components with E/E diagnostic processes:
− serial number;
− time of recording.
Page 9 of 16
GS 90036:2020-02
The BMW planning departments shall ensure, in collaboration with the BMW IT departments, that the information
recorded is able to be linked to the respective product ID. The operators shall ensure the recording of information.
The verification of the data shall be ensured consistently via suitable reworking processes for all components in the
event of an error.
Data logging for E/E products can be carried out by means of E/E vehicle diagnostic methods (electric scanner). It shall
be agreed between Technical Planning and E/E Product and Process Planning for each product. Using suitable
methods (e.g. database, software logistics), E/E Product and Process Planning shall ensure the unique assignment of
the read-out E/E serial number to the installed product and its change status.
8.3 Batch traceability - traceability class B
The BTRV_B requires the marking of the production batch (production lot) with an identifier (e.g. production date, time
or shift). The forecast of the delivery quantity, warehouse inventory data, and consumption can be used to delimit the
production lot to the superordinate installation status in production.
NOTE In PNW 2, the parts supply of production facilities (e.g. PNW 2 plants, PNW 2 contract partners) is largely
ensured via “lots”, which contain 12, 24 or 48 vehicle manufacturing sets. Otherwise, limitation is achieved via
delivery note numbers. The logistical data stored for this purpose shall be used for a batch delimitation.
8.3.1 Marking
Products of the BTRV_B shall be marked with at least the following information:
− part number;
− change index;
− batch number and handling unit number;
− delivered lot size (capacity).
The aforementioned information shall be indicated in the fields of the WBS or ASN provided for this purpose.
The exact implementation shall be defined by the responsible planning department material supply and documented
in the relevant specification, e.g. specification of VDA goods label (available on B2B Portal).
Furthermore, the products shall be marked according to GS 91001 and GS 91004.
One load unit (e.g. KLT container) shall not contain mixed lots. Deviations are subject to agreement with responsible
QMT and logistics departments prior to delivery and line supply.
The manufacturer (e.g. purchased part supplier or in-house parts production) shall ensure, document, and archive the
allocation of production lot to the handling unit number.
NOTE Further transmission of batch information over outgoing goods for, e.g. packing operations is not required.
8.3.2 Data logging
Necessary process specifications (e.g. process standards, logistics standards, process modules, process sequence,
work instructions) shall be developed by the planning specialist departments responsible and released as a binding
document.
In isolated cases (e.g. bulk stock, supermarket and fitment at several locations) it may happen that a product ID
contains several lot numbers of the same part number.
Page 10 of 16
GS 90036:2020-02
8.3.3 Logging in incoming goods department
The production lots are logged in the incoming goods department of the material supply within the scope of the
ongoing data logging procedures. This can either be done by recording the WBS in the incoming goods department
or transferring the information regarding the production lot in the ASN.
The following information shall be recorded:
− part number;
− change index;
− handling unit number and, if possible, batch number;
− delivered lot size (capacity);
− date and local time of data logging.
8.3.4 Logging at the production location (near-production-line batch logging)
The production lot installed is assigned to the product ID (e.g. engine number) at the production location (“close to
the production line”). This is done via batch and time recording of the container from which the product to be installed
is taken. The installed production lot is assigned to the superordinate installation condition that is at the affected line
section at the same time.

9 Definition of the BTRV classification in the course of risk management
How exactly a product can be traced and thus delimited is defined as part of risk management.
For products of BMW Motorrad the classification for traceability is specified via the BTRV generics of BMW Motorrad. There is no specification within the scope of risk
management.

Figure 3: Definition of component retracing as part of risk management
The products pass through risk management according to the process description (BM 5.02.15). In RiMa, the traceability classification is defined as a risk-minimizing measure,
taking into account the specification of this Group Standard. Through the logging of additional information which is performed in conjunction with the BTRV classification, the
products affected by production errors can be better delimited and thus the recall volume owing to manufacturing errors can be reduced during technical campaigns.

GS 90036:2020-02
9.2 Regulations for applying traceability classes
All products with safety- or compliance-relevant characteristics, identifiers or functions shall be classified as BTRV_A.
Furthermore, the traceability class of BTRV_A can be adapted to BTRV_B if the following framework conditions apply:
1) The characteristic/identifier/property shall be firmly integrated into the tool and is adequately validated via
corresponding process methods and demonstrably documented (e.g. 100 % inspection or first-article release and
last-article inspection).
EXAMPLE 1 CCC mark (L-marking) is applied to the product with it firmly integrated into the tool (e.g. screen
printing);
2) The process that determines the characteristic/identifier/property cannot be delimited and documented any more
precisely than in-house-production batches (production lots) (e.g. unambiguous connection between the
manufacturing data and the parts, daily batches in the case of continuous production, material batches, mix
batches, tool idle times).
EXAMPLE 2 The flammability test for the plastic granulate of interior components is confirmed via a material test
certificate for each delivery and production batch is confirmed by the granulate supplier and checked and
documented by the processor.
EXAMPLE 3 Brake pads: Lot designation on part. Friction coefficient for brake pads is validated by the supplier
per lot;
3) The product cannot present sufficient marking due to its geometry and/or functional requirements.
EXAMPLE 4 Wheel valves, shaft seals, squibs, spark plugs and oil spray nozzles feature insufficient possibilities
for BTRV_A-compliant markings;
4) Products that have only compliance-relevant characteristics/identifiers/properties can pass through the tool
“Monetary risk assessment” in the course of risk management and be classified as BTRV_A or BTRV_B based
on the result of the risk assessment;
− products that have only conformity-relevant characteristics/identifiers/properties;
− products that are installed in car derivatives with a production volume of up to 1 000 units per year (small
batch production and custom-made vehicles). In this case, a change from BTRV_A to BTRV_B may only be
implemented for the particular derivative;
5) Stickers shall generally be classified as BTRV_B.
Higher requirements are possible in accordance with section 1.

9.3 Quantity structure for traceability classes of generic parts
For the cost planning at the “target agreement” synchronization point in vehicle projects, a quantity structure
coordinated with the BMW specialist departments issuing the release is provided which includes the traceability
classes at the generic parts level.
This quantity structure can also be used as an input parameter for risk management. Here, it shall be taken into account
that it is not subject to the change service and does not claim to be exhaustive. As already described in section 9, the
final decision on the traceability class shall be defined in the course of risk management.
The quantity structure of parts can be retrieved via the follow link:
[Link]
If there are different requirements at part number level, the higher-level requirement is classified in the quantity
structure (e.g. the seat occupation recognition has different country-specific requirements, USA prescribed by
law/RoW no compliance relevance). In this case, the traceability classification at part number level shall be checked in
the risk management according to Table 1 and adjusted if necessary.
For products of BMW Motorrad the traceability classification is also provided as an agreed quantity structure under
the aforementioned link. The requirements set forth in the BTRV generics for BMW Motorrad shall be taken into
account in the requirements specification, drawing and service level agreement. Deviations from these requirements
shall be confirmed by QK Product Motorrad.
9.4 Further regulations
9.4.1 Fastening elements
Fastening elements shall be evaluated individually within the scope of risk management and classified accordingly.
9.4.2 Inheritance
The highest classification of a sub-component in an assembly defines its classification.
9.4.3 Technical campaign
In the case of a technical campaign, the current traceability classification shall be checked by the specialist department
issuing the release and adjusted if necessary.
10 Traceability in aftersales of the BMW Group
For products that are in the aftersales supply chain (CDC incoming goods department to BMW contract partner
outgoing goods), it shall be ensured that affected products are immediately suspended, if necessary, and permanently
excluded from delivery to the next level of the supply chain. This process and the further procedure are regulated by
the aftersales supply process.
Products that are installed in the BMW dealership organization and VDC shall be recorded as far as possible by means
of E/E diagnostics procedures and be assigned the product ID as part of the order processing in aftersales.
Implementation of logging procedures due to legal specifications are mandatory.
Only vehicle-specific design changes that are transferred to central databases (e.g. ISTA) are documented/shall be
documented. For example, backfitting a vehicle with other motorization or components.
Clear documentation of the goods recipient shall always be aimed for vehicle-connected products and products that
are not installed in the BMW dealership organization or VDC. If no assignment to a product ID (e.g. VIN) is possible,
the invoice data are used to track the products.
Page 15 of 16
GS 90036:2020-02
11 Specifications for suppliers
The supplier is obliged to attain a seamless traceability process among their second tier suppliers for the products
identified within the scope of risk management (BMW and supplier) and to verify and document it in the context of the
sampling inspection. This commitment is also valid for the TIER 2+ level.
Suppliers shall be obliged to assure traceability of their components within their scope of responsibility from PVL
onwards at the latest.
An overview of traceability data shall be presented to the QMT departments during initial sample inspection.
The retention period of traceability data for outsourced parts is at least 15 years after EoP of the affected component
All recorded traceability parameters for the respective products/lots shall be made available to the QMT departments
upon request. Upon request, the data shall be provided within 3 work days.
Data shall be provided in electronic, machine-readable and processable form (e.g. text file, XML files).
The implementation of component marking required for traceability shall be documented in the respectively valid
drawings.
The supplier shall ensure that the supplied production batches are at least able to be delimited to the handling unit
number.
12 Specifications for production partners and joint ventures
At least the currently valid requirements of IATF 16949 (e.g. BMW Terms and Conditions or own part of contract)
apply to production partners and joint ventures.
Additional requirements for the standard logging of products, unless already required by law, shall be contractually
agreed with the production partner by the departments of the vehicle project responsible.
If the development and release of the products in terms of a component is carried out within the BMW Group, the
method for defining the traceability of products shall be implemented over risk management in accordance with this
Group Standard.
If the development and release of the products in terms of a component are carried out only at the production partner's
premises or as a joint venture, after detailed analysis (e.g. audit), the BMW project departments responsible can accept
their approach to defining the component traceability using appropriate methods for risk assessment (e.g. FMEA). The
application of BMW risk management to define the traceability of products is not absolutely mandatory in this case.
In the case of split production (e.g. production of the same derivative at BMW and at production partners), the same
products shall be logged as standard in all affected production sites. This applies to all business relationships.
The implementation of the specifications described in this section applies to all new business relationships starting
from the release of this Group Standard. Separate approaches shall be agreed upon for existing business relationships
as necessary.
13 Retention periods
The currently valid rules of the BMW Group Instruction “Control and archiving of documents” or their local specifics
are applicable for archiving. The currently valid archiving periods are specified in the Appendix “Classification system
for documents”, class number 7.4 (July 2016) of this BMW Group instruction or local specifics, see FO Intranet
regulations online BMW Group Instructions.
Suppliers, production partners and joint ventures shall create and implement independent regulations within the
framework of their QM system that fulfill the conditions of the relevant product liability law(s) and/or other legislation
that defines the retention periods. However, at least the requirements set forth in section 11 shall be fulfilled.
If longer archiving terms are defined by local legislation, this shall be checked and implemented by the departments
responsible for local content.
After the archiving period expires, the traceability data (serial numbers and batches per product) shall be deleted.
Page 16 of 16
GS 90036:2020-02
14 Special rules for software in products
It shall be ensured that as of the delivery state of the product (e.g. vehicle assembly F2), the current statuses of all
installed software packages (e.g. ex works, in service and aftersales software services) and the release states of the
thus derived functions for the VIN are identified, documented and archived.
The applicable rules are defined at BMW in the ItO process “Carrying out software logistics” (process step
ItO [Link]). In the case of adjustments to this regulation, the requirements from this BMW Group Standard shall
be taken into account.
15 Regulations for delimiting products
In the case of the necessity to delimit suspect products, at least the following information shall be provided as soon
as possible, depending on the BTRV classification.
The manufacturer of the product bears overall responsibility for collecting this information in collaboration with the
originator and forwarding it to the BMW specialist departments responsible.
In case of safety and conformity-relevant products, the delimiting information shall be supplier to BMW AQ
departments within 3 work days after request (BM5.04.08 - Implement technical campaign). A fallback strategy for
compliance with this requirement shall be assured by the operator.
NOTE Table 2 is recommended for use as a standardized template.
