REPORTER:

Good day everyone! Welcome to our interactive game called “Guess the Category!”
I’ll show you some real-life objects, and your task is to guess which conic section each one
belongs to.

The Options Are:

Circle, Ellipse, Parabola, or Hyperbola.

LET’S BEGIN!

FIRST OBJECT: CLOCK

This one’s simple. It’s perfectly round, and every point is the same distance from the center.
ANSWER: That’s a Circle a shape where all points are equidistant from a central point.

SECOND OBJECT: SWITCH

Notice how it curves outward in opposite directions.
ANSWER: This is a Hyperbola, made of two mirrored curves that open away from each other.

THIRD OBJECT: AWARD (ACRYLIC)

This object isn’t exactly circular it’s stretched into an oval shape.
ANSWER: That’s an Ellipse, which has two focal points and looks like a flattened circle.

FOURTH OBJECT: LOCK

Here we see a U-shaped curve that’s symmetrical and smooth.
ANSWER: That’s a Parabola, formed by points equidistant from a fixed point and a directrix.

QUICK RECAP:

Circle – Perfectly round, all points are the same distance from the center

Ellipse – An oval with two focal points

Parabola – U-shaped and symmetrical

Hyperbola – Two opposing curves that open outward

Reporter:
That’s it for our game! As you can see, conic sections are all around us in everyday objects.
Thank you for playing “Guess the Category!”
Reporter:
Great job, everyone! Now that we’ve had some fun with our game, let’s take a moment to better
understand each conic section and how they appear in real life.

SLIDE: CIRCLE

The clock and the door lock are great examples of circles because they are perfectly round, with
every point on the edge the same distance from the center. This even shape is what defines a
circle. These everyday items show how common circular designs are.

SLIDE: ELLIPSE

The acrylic award plaque represents an ellipse because it looks like a stretched circle. Instead
of one center, ellipses have two focal points that shape the curve. This makes them ideal for
elegant designs like plaques and signage.

SLIDE: HYPERBOLA

The feminine wash bottle curves outward on both sides, forming a mirrored shape that opens
away from the center — a key feature of a hyperbola. Though subtle, this hyperbolic design
adds both form and function to the product. It’s a real-world example of how hyperbolas appear
in packaging.

SLIDE: PARABOLA

The trophy displays a U-shaped curve that is smooth and symmetrical, making it a great
example of a parabola. This shape is formed by points equally distant from a focus and a line.
It’s commonly used in design for both beauty and structure.

Reporter:
So, as we’ve seen, conic sections aren’t just abstract math they’re all around us in everyday
objects.
Understanding them helps us appreciate the math in design, nature, and technology.

Thank you once again for your attention!
