Description:
The New Media Adaptation project asks students to take one concept covered in course readings
this semester and then convert these ideas into a digital format.
For example, next week, we'll discuss gamification and how it can improve our well-being. So,
say you like this concept and want to develop a webpage, a five-minute podcast, or a brief
YouTube video where you talk about what gamification is and some of the key elements
associated with this concept. Alternatively, you may also choose to create an animation or a
mini-game that illustrates the core principles of gamification and how it works. Be creative!
Y'all may choose any digital format other than plain text since the main goal of this assignment
is to show how our understanding of communication changes based on the medium we use
(traditional vs. digital).
Instructions:
For your final project, you will work in groups of 1 - 4 students to adapt one of our course readings from
this semester into a new digital medium. For example, you might choose:
A YouTube video (you should specify the genre you want to work in: an unboxing video? A
“_________ Reacts” video? A skit or comedy sketch? A tutorial? A TED Talk? A music video? A
Let’s Play? Something else?)
A podcast or radio play
A short video game or interactive narrative
An animation or machinima
A website
Or anything else you can dream up!
1. The first step in this project is to identify a topic of your interest that needs to be related to our
course. Then, think how you can adapt this topic to a new medium:
Why you think that the digital medium you chose is the ideal vehicle for the argument being
made in a particular reading?
Who is the intended audience of your piece and how will the medium you chose help you to
reach that audience?
What are the unique strengths or affordances of the medium (things it can do better than any
other) and how did you play to these strengths in your project?
How will you develop a method to cite quotations and paraphrases from your chosen reading
material in this new medium?
Who are the members of your group and what job(s) do they plan on doing to contribute to the
overall final product? Think of this as your “credits page.” What role or roles did each group
member play? Examples of possible roles include (but are not limited to):
o Scriptwriter
o Performer
o Camera Operator
o Editor
o Graphic Designer
o Animator
o Programmer
o Project Coordinator
2. Once you pick a topic and reflect on the questions mentioned above, you can move on to creating
your new media project. It will be evaluated according to the criteria in the New Media Adaptation
Rubric uploaded to Blackboard.
