2. To remember the probability concepts and apply probability functions.
3. To analyze the simulation models and apply simulation techniques.
4. To create models of some mechanical systems and apply simulation techniques.
5. To create models of some manufacturing systems and apply simulation techniques.
COURSE CONTENT

UNIT 1
Concepts of Simulation and Modelling: Introduction of System, model and simulation,Continuous
and discrete systems, Linear and nonlinear systems, Principles of modeling, Stochastic activities,
Static and Dynamic models, Role and basic components of simulation model, Steps in a simulation
study, advantages of simulation.

UNIT 2
Probability Concepts in Simulation: Stochastic variables, discrete and continuous probability
functions, Random numbers, Generation of Random numbers, Variance reduction techniques,
Determination of length of simulation runs.

UNIT 3
System Simulation: Techniques of simulation, Monte Carlo method, Experimental nature of
simulation, Numerical computation techniques, Continuous system models, Analog and Hybrid
simulation, Feedback systems, Computers in simulation studies, Simulation software packages.
System Dynamics: Growth and Decay models, Logistic curves, System dynamics diagrams.

UNIT 4
Simulation of Mechanical Systems: Building of simulation models in mechanical and thermal
systems, Simulation of mechanical systems, fluid & hydraulic systems, and thermal systems,
Relevant case studies, Simulation software for thermal and mechanical systems.

UNIT 5
Simulation of Manufacturing Systems: Simulation of material handling systems, queuing systems,
Flexible manufacturing systems, Relevant case studies, Simulation software for manufacturing
systems.
