ASSIGNMENT – 1
Name of the Unit/Lesson: Ch-1: Sets Grade: XI
Subject: Mathematics
1. Write down the power set of the following sets: (i) A = {p, q, r, s} (ii) {1, 2, {3, 4}}
2. If U = the set of all numbers in natural number system
A = {x : x is a prime number }B = {x : x is an even number} Then verify, the following
(i)(A∩B)´ = A´ 𝖴 B´ (ii)A´ − B´ = B – A
3. If D = {x : x is divisible by 2 and 3 and 0<x<20} and B = {x: x is a multiple of 6 and 0<x<25} then find D – B?
4. Let A, B and C be sets such that ∅ ≠ A∩B ⊆ C. Then which of the following statements is not true?
(i) B∩C ≠ ∅ (ii)(C𝖴A)∩(C𝖴B) = C (iii) If (A – C) ⊆ B, then A⊆B (iv) If (A – B) ⊆ C, then A⊆C
5. If n[P(A)] + n[P(A)] = 2198 then find n(A) and n(B).
6. Two finite sets have m and n elements respectively. The total number of subsets of first set is 56 more than
the total number of subsets of the second set then find the values of m and n.
7. Let X = the sets of all letters in the word “DELHI” and Y = the sets of all letters in the word “INDIA”. Find X𝖴Y.
8. Let A = sets of all letters in the word MATHEMATICS and B = sets of all letters in the word
STATISTICS. Find A∩B, A∆B, A-B.
9. Draw the Venn diagram for A∆B.
10. If 𝑈 = {𝑥: 𝑥 ∈ 𝑍, −2 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 0}, 𝐴 = {𝑥: 𝑥 = 2𝑝 + 1, 𝑝 ∈ 𝑍, −1 ≤ 𝑝 ≤ 4}, 𝐵 = {𝑥: 𝑥 = 3𝑞 + 1, 𝑞 ∈ 𝑍, −1 ≤ 𝑞 < 4}
Then verify De Morgan’s laws of complementation.
