CLASS: XI - A MATHEMATICS - ASSIGNMENT
TOPIC: RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS
Do the following:
1. Given A={2, 3}, B={4, 5} and C={5, 6}, find A×(B∪C), A×(B∩C).
2. Let A={1, 2, 3} and R={(a, b): |𝑎2 − 𝑏2 |≤5, a, b ∈ A}. Write R as set of ordered pairs.
3. Is g={(1, 1), (2, 3), (3, 5), (4, 7)} a function? If this is described by the formula, 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 𝛼𝑥 + 𝛽, then
what values should be assigned to α and β?
4. Express the function 𝑓: 𝑋 → 𝑅 given by 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 3 + 1 as the set of ordered pairs, where
X = {-1, 0, 3, 9, 7}.
𝑎𝑥−𝑏
5. If 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = , show that 𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑦).
𝑏𝑥−𝑎
6. Find the domain of the following:
1 1
(i) 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = √𝑥 − 2 (ii) 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = (iii) 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = {(𝑥: ) : 𝑥 ∈ 𝑅, 𝑥 ≠ ±1}
√𝑥−5 1−𝑥2
1
(iv) 𝑓 (𝑥 ) =
√[𝑥]2−[𝑥]−6
7. Find the range of the following:
|𝑥−4|
(i) 𝑓(𝑥 ) = |𝑥 − 3| (ii) 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 1 − |𝑥 − 2| (iii) 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥−4
8. A relation R is defined from a set A={2, 3, 4, 5} to a set B={3, 6, 7, 10} as follows:
"(𝑥, 𝑦) ∈ 𝑅 ↔ 𝑥 𝑖𝑠 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑦 𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑦"
Express R as a set of ordered pairs and determine its domain and range.
9. Let R be the relation on the set N of natural numbers defined by R={(a, b): a+3b=12, a ∈ N, b ∈ N}.
Find R, domain of R, range of R?
