Study Guide on Jose Rizal's Life and Works

I. Important Writings of Jose Rizal

1. Noli Me Tangere (1887) - A novel published in Berlin, Germany, that exposed the
social injustices and abuses suffered by Filipinos under Spanish rule. Rizal used his
perspective as a doctor to diagnose and prescribe remedies for the societal ills of his
time.

2. El Filibusterismo (1891) - A sequel to Noli Me Tangere, published in Ghent, Belgium.

This novel took on a more revolutionary tone, showing the darker side of Spanish
oppression and the growing call for change.

3. Mi Ultimo Adios (1896) - A farewell poem hidden inside a lamp given to his sister
Trinidad before his execution. It expressed his deep love for the Philippines and
inspired Filipinos to continue the fight for freedom.

4. Annotations of Antonio de Morga's Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas - Rizal provided

historical insights and corrections, showcasing the advanced civilization of pre-
colonial Filipinos before Spanish colonization.

5. The Indolence of the Filipinos - An essay published in La Solidaridad, arguing that

Filipino laziness was a result of Spanish oppression, not an inherent trait.

6. The Philippines A Century Hence - A four-part essay predicting the future of the
Philippines, warning that continued Spanish rule would lead to revolution or foreign
intervention.

7. Religiosity of the Filipinos - An essay asserting that science and reason could deepen
the understanding of faith.

II. Rizal's Scientific and Artistic Contributions

 While in exile in Dapitan, Rizal engaged in various scientific studies, particularly in

conchology (the study of shells). He discovered multiple species, including Draco
rizali (lizard), Apogonia rizali (beetle), and Rhacophorus rizali (frog).

 Conducted archaeological, geological, and anthropological research, corresponding

with scientists worldwide.

 Rizal was also a skilled artist, using his talents in sculpture, sketching, and painting to
document his experiences and express his creativity. His artistic works included
portraits, comic strips, and even an illustrated cover for Noli Me Tangere.
III. Rizal's Role in Philippine Nationalism

 Formed organizations to unite Filipinos abroad and fight for reforms:

o Kidlat Club (1889) - A group of Filipinos gathered for the Paris Exposition.

o Los Indios Bravos - A movement that embraced the term "Indio" to uplift
Filipino identity.

o Asosacion La Solidaridad - A group that published La Solidaridad, the primary

newspaper advocating for reforms.

 La Liga Filipina (1892) - Rizal's final organization, aimed at uniting Filipinos for
mutual aid, education, and peaceful reform. However, it was short-lived as Rizal was
arrested and exiled to Dapitan soon after its formation.
