Green computing, as explained in the article, refers to the practice of adopting eco-friendly

strategies in the use, design, disposal, and manufacturing of technology. The overarching goal
of green computing is to reduce the environmental impact of technology, especially in light
of the ongoing climate crisis. It promotes practices like energy-efficient devices, sustainable
material sourcing, safe disposal of outdated technology, and improved manufacturing
processes to decrease emissions. This approach is gaining traction among both IT
manufacturers and consumers, with a focus on creating devices that are both environmentally
friendly and economically sustainable.

My personal purchasing and computing behaviors align somewhat with the principles of
green computing, though not always perfectly. I tend to choose energy-efficient devices
whenever possible, such as laptops and smartphones that advertise low power consumption. I
also make an effort to turn off devices when not in use and dispose of old electronics in an
environmentally responsible way. However, my computing habits are not always aligned
with all aspects of green computing. For instance, I sometimes upgrade my devices before
their lifespan ends, which contradicts the green computing ideal of extending product
longevity. Additionally, I haven’t yet fully embraced purchasing refurbished technology,
despite knowing its environmental benefits.

One of the personal challenges I face in fully aligning with the article’s suggestions is the
pressure to keep up with the latest technology. New gadgets often come with features that
promise enhanced performance, and there’s a natural tendency to replace older devices in
favor of more “cutting-edge” options. This consumer culture, focused on speed and novelty,
makes it difficult to prioritize sustainability. Moreover, my current living situation—where
power outages are frequent—has led me to value having devices that can charge quickly and
last longer, even if it means choosing products that may not be the most energy-efficient.

In conclusion, while I strive to incorporate green computing practices in my daily life, I

recognize that there’s room for improvement. The article has inspired me to take further
steps, like seeking out more sustainable technology options and being more mindful of my
consumption patterns. However, balancing sustainability with the desire for new technology
remains an ongoing challenge.

For reference, the article “What is Green Computing and What Does it Imply?” by Stephanie
Safdie (2023) was used to form the understanding of green computing and its impact on
sustainability.
