NARRATOR: London, just after Christmas. A frosty morning in Baker Street—Sherlock Holmes
and Dr. Watson are settling in for a quiet day when an unexpected mystery arrives...

Scene 1: Holmes’s Sitting Room


NARRATOR: Holmes reclines in his purple dressing-gown, pipe at hand. A battered hat rests on
a chair.

WATSON: Good morning, Holmes. That hat again?

HOLMES: Yes, Watson. The hat—and this goose—were left behind after a scuffle Christmas
morning. Peterson brings them to me. The goose has been eaten, but…

NARRATOR: Suddenly, Peterson bursts in, breathless and excited.

PETERSON: Mr. Holmes, you must see this—my wife found a blue gem in the goose’s crop!

HOLMES: By all that’s wondrous… it’s the missing blue carbuncle from the Countess of
Morcar!

Scene 2: Interview with Henry Baker


NARRATOR: Peterson returns with Henry Baker, hoping to reclaim his hat.

HOLMES: Mr. Baker? You were associated with that hat and goose?

HENRY BAKER: Yes, sir. I lost them and feared they'd gone forever. Thank you for returning
them.

HOLMES: We ate your goose—this is a replacement.

NARRATOR: Baker gratefully accepts and departs. Holmes glances at Watson.

HOLMES: He knows nothing of the gem. On to the goose’s source…

Scene 3: At Covent Garden Poultry Stall


NARRATOR: Holmes and Watson enter the bustling Covent Garden market.

HOLMES: You supplied geese to the Alpha Inn?


MRS. OAKSHOTT: Indeed. But James Ryder bought a couple of barred-tail geese last week.

Scene 4: Confronting James Ryder


NARRATOR: At 221B Baker Street, Holmes has summoned James Ryder, the hotel attendant,
who looks pale and desperate.

HOLMES: Ryder – you hid the carbuncle in a goose. Why?

RYDER: I was desperate, Holmes! I slipped it into a goose at my sister’s house—but mixed it
up soon after.
I searched frantically—two barred geese looked alike. One went away with Mr. Baker!

HOLMES: You're lucky I won’t turn you in. But let this be the end.

NARRATOR: A broken man, Ryder sobs; Holmes shows uncommon mercy.

Scene 5: Resolution
WATSON: You let him go? After everything?

HOLMES: Yes. He’s ruined enough. Justice has its own design.

WATSON: You never cease to surprise, Holmes.

HOLMES: Elementary, my dear Watson.
