Class 10 Physics - Chapter 5: Refraction of Light

Total Marks: 40

Section A: Very Short Answer Questions (2 marks each × 4 = 8 marks)

1. Define the term refraction of light.

2. What is the refractive index of a medium?

3. State the laws of refraction of light.

4. Name the phenomenon due to which a pencil partly immersed in water and held

obliquely appears to be bent at the water surface.

Section B: Short Answer Questions (2.5 marks each × 4 = 10 marks)

5. A ray of light passes from air into water. If the angle of incidence is 30°, and the

angle of refraction is 22°, calculate the refractive index of water.

6. Explain why a coin placed at the bottom of a glass tumbler filled with water appears

to be raised.

7. Draw a ray diagram to show the refraction of light through a rectangular glass slab

when the incident ray is oblique to the surface.

8. An object is placed 20 cm from a convex lens of focal length 10 cm. Calculate the

position and nature of the image formed.

Section C: Short Answer Questions (3 marks each × 4 = 12 marks)

9. A concave lens has a focal length of 15 cm. At what distance should the object be

placed from the lens so that it forms an image at 10 cm from the lens? Also, find the

magnification produced by the lens.

10. Explain with the help of a diagram why a tank full of water appears less deep than

it actually is.

11. The refractive index of glass is 1.5. Calculate the speed of light in glass. (Speed of

light in air = 3 × 10^8 m/s)

12. An object is placed 60 cm from a lens which gives a virtual image at a distance of

20 cm in front of the lens. What is the focal length of the lens? Is the lens converging

or diverging? Give reasons for your answer.

Section D: Long Answer Questions (5 marks each × 2 = 10 marks)

13. With the help of a labelled diagram, explain why a pencil partly immersed in water

appears to be bent at the water surface. State whether the bending of the pencil will

increase or decrease if water is replaced by another liquid which is optically more

dense than water. Give reasons for your answer.

14. A 2 cm tall object is placed 40 cm from a diverging lens of focal length 15 cm.

Find the position and size of the image formed. Also, state the nature of the image.
