TITLE
“Exploring Procrastination and Time Management Challenges Among Mechanical Engineering
Students at Malayan Colleges Mindanao”
PROBLEM
Mechanical Engineering students at Malayan Colleges Mindanao often face issues with
procrastination and poor time management, which can affect their academic performance. Many
have difficulty prioritizing tasks like group projects, assignments, and exam preparation, leading to
stress and missed deadlines. This study aims to identify the causes of these challenges and suggest
practical solutions to improve students' productivity and performance.
THEORY
• Self-Regulation Theory- This theory explains how people set goals, monitor their progress,
and control their actions to stay on track. Some students may procrastinate because they
struggle to plan tasks, check their progress, or avoid distractions. Using this theory, the study
will explore how students manage their time and identify gaps in their strategies.
• Self-Determination Theory- SDT focuses on motivation and how autonomy, competence,
and relationships influence behavior. Students may procrastinate if they feel tasks are not
meaningful, they lack confidence, or they don’t feel supported. This theory will help uncover
the role of motivation in students' procrastination habits.
• Expectancy Theory- Expectancy Theory explains that motivation depends on confidence,
the value of the outcome, and how long it takes to achieve it. Students may procrastinate if
they doubt their abilities, see little value in the task, or feel the rewards are too far away. This
theory will help explain how these beliefs impact time management.
METHODS
This study will use a qualitative approach, conducting in-depth, semi-structured interviews with
Mechanical Engineering students from Malayan Colleges Mindanao to explore their experiences with
procrastination and time management. The responses will be analyzed using thematic analysis to
identify key patterns and themes related to their academic behaviors. The will guide the
interpretation of findings to better understand the challenges and strategies students use.
