High Resistance Measurement Lab Guide

The document outlines an experiment to measure high resistance using the loss of charge method, where a capacitor discharges through a resistor and the voltage is recorded over time. The procedure includes setting up the circuit with specified components and recording voltage values at intervals. The report requires completion of a data table, plotting results, and discussing findings.

EXP NO: - 05
EXP NAME: - MEASUREMENT OF HIGH RESISTANCE BY LOSS OF CHARGE METHOD

Objective:
To study the principle of measuring unknown resistance by loss of charge method

Theory:

In this method the resistance (R) with a very high value can be measured by connecting it in
parallel with a capacitor (C). The capacitor is charged to a suitable voltage by means of a
battery having a voltage V and is then allowed to discharge through the resistance. The
terminal voltage is observed over a considerable period of time during discharge. The voltage
across the capacitor at any instant during charging can be given by-
−t
RC
V o =V (1−e )

Now the voltage across the capacitor during discharging is given by-
(−t / Rc¿)¿
V o =V e

Rearranging the above equation the expression of R is found as-

t
R=
v
cln( )
vo

Procedure:
1) Choose C = 1µF, R = 1MΩ and R1 = 100kΩ. Connect the components like the design
shown in the above design.
2) Connect a Variable DC source and set V = 15V
3) Connect a voltmeter parallel to the capacitor.
4) Record the value of V for n = 1,2, ……… 20 seconds
5) Repeat step 1 to 4 for C = 1µF and R = 4MΩ
6) Repeat step 1 to 4 for C = 10µF and R = 1MΩ
7) Repeat step 1 to 4 for C = 10µF and R = 2MΩ

2) Plot of Vo vs. t for all cases.
3) Relevant discussions.
