2.2 Zero of a Quadratic Polynomial

Consider a quadratic polynomial, y= P() =x-x-2. Let us take a few values of y corresponding to a
random values of x in this table:

-3 -2 0 2 3 4
4 0 2 -2 10
On plotting these points on the Cartesian plane, and drawing a
smooth free hand curve passing through th
points, we get the graph of y=x*-x-2. This graph is called a parabola.

This is true for any quadratic polynomial, i.e., the zeroes of a quadratic polynomial ar+

2.3 Different cases of parabola

Based on the shape of the graph, and where it cuts the x-axis, the following three cases can happen:

y= ax+ bx +c

y=ax+ bx+ c

(ii) (iv)

The x-coordinate of A is the only zero for the quadratic polynomial ax + bx +c in this case.
:
Case-ll Here, the graph is either completely atbove the x
-axis or completely below the x-axis. So, it does not
cut the x-axis at any point.
y= ax'+ bx +c

y= ax+ bx +c
(vi)

So, the quadratic polvnomial ax'+ bx +c has no zero in this case.
So, you cansee geometrically that a quadratic polynomial can have either two distinct zeroes or one zero, or no
zero. This also means that a polynomial of degree 2 has atmost two zeroes.

Note : In general given a polynomial p(x) of degree n, the graph of y =p(x) intersects the x-axis at atmost
n points. Therefore, a polynomial p(x) of degree n has atmost n zeros.

4.1 Long Division Method
The process for dividing one polynomial by another is very similar to that for dividing one
number by another
formal algorithm (called the long division method) is given below:
Step 1: Arrange the indices of the polynomial in descending order
of their degrees. Replace the missing term
with 0.
Step 2: Divide the first term of the dividend (the polynomial to be divided) by the first term of
the divisor. This giv
the first term of the quotient.
Step 3: Multiply the entire divisor by the first term of the quotient and write it below
the dividend.
Step 4: Subtract the product from the dividend then bring down the next (single) term.
The difference clubbed w

the next term will be the new dividend.

Step 5: Repeat steps 2-4 to find the second term of the quotient, and the new dividend.
Step 6: Continue the process until the final remainder is obtained. This is
either zero or is of lower degree th
the divisor.
If the divisor is a factor of the dividend, you will
obtain a remainder equal to zero. If the divisor is not a
factor
the dividend, youwill obtain a remainder whose index is lower than the index of the divisor.
Let's see a few examples to understand this long division process:
