MOTHER DAIRY VISIT

29th February 2024

Aim and Objective:
Our aim to visit mother dairy was to get hands- on exposure to the
processes involved in milk production, processing and distribution as
well as to familiarize with the significance of dairy products in
promoting health.
Place of study:
Our place of study was MOTHER DAIRY FACTORY, 30, NEW
PATPARGANJ ROAD, BLOCK D, PATPARGANJ, NEW DELHI-
110092.
Teachers Accompanied: Dr. Sumit Sharma
Dr. Rita Mandora
Activity:
• We reached the mother dairy plant in the morning.
• There we were welcomed by the Unit Head who guided us in
the mother dairy and made us aware about the processing of
milk production.
A documentary movie was shown to us in the conference hall. It made
us aware about National Dairy Development Programme under which
the Operation Flood was started which was an initiative to increase
the production of milk, then taken by the Prime Minister, Shri Lal
Bahadur Shastri, at that time.
Then, we were taken to the factory where we saw the machines by
which milk is treated and the whole process is done.
Steps done before the milk is dispatched: - (11 Steps)
STEP 1 - Milk collection from farmers
Farmers come to milk pooling point, where raw milk is collected,
tested, chilled and stored at below butter milk chiller. Milk is
collected at 7 AM in morning and 5-6 PM in evening.
STEP 2 - Milk transportation
1) Raw mixed milk collected from villages is transported through
insulated road and rail trackers.
2) Raw mixed milk post chilling is stored in silos.
STEP 3 - Testing
Raw mixed milk undergoes 29 stringent quality tests before it is
accepted for processing. Broadly raw mixed milk is tested for:
▪ Right composition
▪ Low bacterial load
▪ Free from contaminants and adulterants
▪ Foreign materials
STEP 4 - Receiving Dock
Raw mixed milk is unloaded and stored in stainless steel insulated
silos below 4 degree Celsius before processing.
STEP 5 - Clarification
It involves application of Centrifugal Force which means rotation of
milk at high speed (at 6100 rpm) to remove foreign matters like fine
dust particles.
STEP 6 - Homogenization and Fortification
Vitamin A is added in milk.
Then milk is subjected to very high pressure to break the fat globules,
thereby fat is mixed evenly in every drop of milk and float on top.
Homogenized milk is easily digestible, good for tea, coffee and curd
making.
STEP 7 - Pasteurization
Kills pathogenic bacteria by heating the milk to 72 degree Celsius for
15-16 seconds and then immediately cooling it to 4 degree Celsius
with almost no change in the nutritive value of milk.
STEP 8 - Standardization
In adherence to meet Safety Standard Regulations, milk is processed
to ensure a standard composition of milk.
STEP 9 - Filling Dock
After milk is processed, milk is either filled in tankers or packed in
poly-packs.
STEP 10 - Control Room
After milk is dispatched from dairy, the delivery is continuously
monitored by control room. Trackers are equipped with GPS so that
they can be easily tracked and directed for smooth delivery.
STEP 11 - Multiple mode of vending milk in market
I. Mother Dairy Booth

PURIFICATION OF WATER

INTRODUCTION:

Department of community medicine has organised a field visit to

:Water Treatment Plant,Pratap Vihar, Ghaziabad On19-03-24 .
as a part of educational visit. B.H.M.S. 4th year students joined the
visit under the guidance of faculty-

➢ Dr. Sumit Sharma (HOD of Community Medicine)

➢ Dr Rita
Water treatment is whereby the used water or raw water from the river is treated in process to make the
water more acceptable for a desired end-used. The goal of water treatment is to remove existing
contaminants in the water, or reduce the concentration of such contaminants so the water becomes fit
for its desired end-used. The process involved in treating water is solids separation using physical
process and chemical process.

Before the water is distributed into the public houses, the water has to undergo the water treatment
process such as follows:
NASH WATER TROUGH FILTER UNIT
1. Aeration: to eliminate unneeded dissolved gases such as
(CO2, H2S,NH3). It is also to increase DO (dissolved oxygen) level in water and remove DOC
(Dissolved organic carbon)
2. Coagulation: It is the removal of turbidity from the water.
Turbidity is a cloudy appearance of water caused by small particles suspended therein. Water with
little or no turbidity will clear .The substance used is Poly aluminium chloride (PAC)
3. Flocculation: It is mixing process in which particles are brought into contact in order to
promote their agglomeration.
4. Sedimentation: It is to remove suspended material from water by the action of gravity.
5. Filtration: It removes suspended particles from water by passing the water through medium such
as sand.
6. Backwashing: It is washing of sand filter by reversing the flow of water. It dislodges
impurities & clean up the sand bed.
7. Disinfection: It is to destroy pathogens within a practicable period of time using a chemical such
as chlorine and PAC (poly aluminium chloride).
• After water passes or flowing through all distinctive features, it's collected into water tank and ready
to be supply to houses area.

Aims and Objectives

The objectives of visiting the water treatment plant are:-

• To study the types of water treatment plant used.
• To study the process of water treatment. Date
& Place of visit
Students visited the Water Treatment Plant, Pratap Vihar, Ghaziabad, on 19-03-23

The visit started with students arriving at Water Treatment Plant under the guidance of faculty- Dr.
Sumit Sharma
(HOD of Community Medicine) & Dr. Rita (Assistant prof. Of Community medicine )The visit included:
1. Tour of the water treatment plant: There was tour arranged by authority representative who
explained well about the structure and working of the water purification plant and offered us a visit to
the concerned areas. Students got an excellent benefit by visiting the water purification plant in
Ghaziabad with a capacity of 120 million litres /day and understand about the purification methods.
2. Interactive Session: The medical students engaged with the authority representative who
addressed their questions & concerns about the water purification process. This approach
allowed for meaningful conversations and increased understanding among the students .
3. Water treatment. process:

i. COLLECTION :-
The raw water which is supplied to the water treatment plant comes from river.
ii. COAGULATION:-
The raw water is first treated with chemical substance chlorine. The quantity of varies depending upon
the turbidity, colour, temperature & pH of the water.
iii. FLASH MIXING:-
Treated water is then subjected to violent agitation in a mixing chamber for a few minutes. This allows
quick and rapid dissemination of alum throughout the bulk of the water.
iv. FLOCCULATION:-
This phase involves a slow and gentle stirring of the treated water in a flocculation chamber. The
mechanised type of rotor is used. This causes the formation of thick copious white flocculent precipitate.
The thicker the precipitate is, the higher is the settling velocity

V. SEDIMENTATION:-
- The coagulated water is now lead into sedimentation tank where it is detained for 2-6 hrs when
the flocculent precipitate together with impurities and bacteria settle down in the tank.
- At least 95% of the flocculent precipitate needs to be removed from the water before it is
admitted to the rapid filters.
vi. FILTERATION :-
- Each filter unit has 12 filter beds of 4m of height .
- The thickness of sand bed is 1 m
- The under drains at the bottom of the filter bed collects the filter water.
V. BACKWASHING :-
- As filter proceeds, the suspended impurities and bacteria clog the filters.
- The filter soon becomes dirty and begin to lose their efficiency and are subjected to
backwashing.
- This is done by reversing the flow of water through the sand bed.
- Washing is stopped when clear sand is visible and the wash water is sufficiently clean.
- It takes about 15 minutes.
vii. DISINFECTION :-
- This is the last step before storage and distribution of this water.
- The process used is chlorination and PAC .
viii. RESERVOIR :-
- We have visited the reservoir where the purified water was stored.
- From there it was supplied for household use.

Result
The visit was a success in educating the B.H.M.S. students about the process of water treatment
on a large
scale for public use.

Conclusion
Water plays a very important role in human life, whether for daily routine purposes or human health.
This field visit gave us knowledge about the purification of water on a large scale and made us
aware about the quality of water since it may affect human health especially. Also the trip made us
realise that it is not easy to supply the water directly from the main supply to the people. Thus, thanks
to the responsible party and the workers who invested in this project to ensure the health and
convenience of the people who supply them with safe drinking water .

Socio-cultural activities such as food stalls and street plays significantly influence students' engagement with public health messages by embedding educational content within interactive and relatable formats. Food stalls during Nutrition Week engaged students by challenging them to create nutritious dishes, thus fostering a practical understanding of healthy eating. Similarly, street plays like nukkad natak on mental health and skits on health rights during World Health Day allowed students to dramatize and discuss real-life scenarios concerning mental and public health issues, making the messages more accessible and impactful. These formats facilitate deeper student involvement and promote active learning through participation in culturally relevant and experiential activities .

Expert guidance from faculty members like Dr. Sumit Sharma played a crucial role in the success of health awareness initiatives at Bakson Homoeopathic Medical College by providing direction, ensuring the accuracy of information, and facilitating the organizational process. Faculty involvement helped in crafting comprehensive educational activities tailored to specific themes, such as mental health awareness with nukkad natak and the AIDS awareness rally. Their experience and expertise ensured that these initiatives were impactful, well-managed, and aligned with educational and community goals. This mentorship not only increased the events' effectiveness but also empowered students by enhancing their organizational skills and understanding of public health communication .

The water treatment plant visit utilized a combination of methods to enhance students' understanding of large-scale water purification processes. First, a guided tour was provided by authority representatives who explained the function and importance of each stage in the purification process, from coagulation to disinfection. Secondly, an interactive session allowed students to engage directly with the representatives, asking questions and gaining insights into the intricacies of water treatment. Such hands-on learning and real-world application reinforced theoretical knowledge from the classroom, making the educational experience both practical and memorable .
