PART TWO – Vocabulary and Usage (50 marks)
Section 1: Vocabulary (14 marks)
Please study Animal Conversation Booklet p. 5, 9-17.
Then try to fill in the blanks below without referring to the booklet.
Part A
rare abundant preserve waters history
overfishing animal mammals scientists noise
conservation

[1] Pink dolphins are (1) mammals , not fish. They have lived in the urban

(2) waters around Hong Kong. However, Some fishermen use modern fishing

techniques to catch their food - fish. Because of (3) overfishing , dolphins do not

have (4) abundant food resources. There is rising concern among (5) scientists that

these (6) rare dolphins will disappear from the waters and become extinct as their

numbers keep dropping. Therefore, (7) animal conservation is important. More

should be done to protect or (8) preserve them.

Part B

give birth offspring pollution Ocean Park

hustle and bustle culture Tsing Ma Bridge human beings

The (9) hustle and bustle of the waters caused by the activities of (10) human beings

can be threats to the dolphins. Vessel traffic there means that ships can cause

(11) pollution . Development along the coast could also be a problem, as there were

quite a lot of infrastructure projects being built, including (12) Tsing Ma Bridge, Hong

Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the third airport runway project. Even if there are no

ships and no development, dolphins are still in trouble. As it takes four to six years

for the mother dolphin to (13) give birth to one baby, the number of (14) offspring

would be small. 3
