SAP FICO – General Ledger (GL) Overview
What is the General Ledger (G/L)?
The General Ledger is the central repository of all financial transactions in SAP. It provides a
complete record of financial accounting data, supporting both internal and external
reporting requirements.
Key Features of General Ledger Accounting
• Integrated with sub-ledgers (AP, AR, Asset Accounting, etc.)
• Supports parallel accounting via Ledger Approach (Leading & Non-Leading Ledgers)
• Real-time posting from various modules (MM, SD, HR)
• Tracks profit centers, cost centers, and segments for reporting
• Supports Document Splitting for detailed financial analysis
Components of G/L Master Data
1. Chart of Accounts (COA)
– A list of all G/L accounts used by an organization.
– Types:
o Operating COA (day-to-day)
o Group COA (consolidation)
o Country-specific COA (statutory reporting)
2. G/L Account Master Record
o Company Code Segment (e.g., tax category, account group)
o Chart of Accounts Segment (e.g., account type: balance sheet or P&L)
G/L Transactions and Posting
• Transactions are entered using T-codes like FB50, FB01, or F-02
• Each posting includes:
o Document type (e.g., SA for G/L)
o Posting key (debit/credit)
o G/L account number
o Amount
o Cost center/profit center
o Text/reference fields
