But Asc must be at least 50% of Ast hence,
Asc = 753 mm2
(Clause 6.2.3 of IS 13920: 2016)
Top reinforcement required is larger of 2363 mm2 and 753 mm2
Hence, provide 2363 mm2
Bottom reinforcement required is larger of 1182 mm2 and 1506 mm2
Hence, provide 1506 mm2
In an external joint, both the top and bottom bars of the beam shall be provided with
anchorage length beyond the inner face of the column equal to the development length in tension
+ 10 times bar diameter minus the allowance for 90-degree bend
(Clause 6.2.5 of IS 13920:2016)
Type of Bar For deformed bars in compression
𝐿_𝑑 = 𝜙𝑓_𝑦/4𝜏_𝑏𝑑
Dia of bar 20 mm
τbd = 2.8 N/mm2
Ld = 741 mm
Allowance for 90-degree bend = 160
So, Anchorage length = 781 mm
Generally, in the field for quick practice, the development length requirement is calculated
by ‘41 times Ø’ or ‘41 Ø’
Anchorage length is one type of development length also which is provided inside
the fixed or support end. Which varies on Dia or angle of bar which we have to bent,
when the angle decrees anchorage length increase or vice versa. It is 4 times dia of bar for
180 Degree bend,6 times for 135 degree and 8 times for 90 degree bend of bar.

Design Checks
Check for Axial Stress
Assume Column Size = 400 X 500
Highest factored maximum axial force = 1423.5 kN (Maximum / Lowest at AT or BB among
Factored maximum axial stress = 7.1175 MPa all load combination is considered)
< 0.4fck 10 MPa
Lowest factored maximum axial force = 494.4 kN
Factored minimum axial stress = 2.472 MPa
> 0.08fck 2 MPa
Hence, design as a column member.

Check for member size
Width of column, B = 400 mm

Hence, ok (Clause 7.1.1 of IS 13920:2016)
Clause 7.1.1 requires minimum column lateral dimension as 20 db. This implies that with 400 mm
wide column, the beams cannot have more than 20 mm diameter as longitudinal
reinforcement bars.
Depth of column, D = 500 mm
Cross-Section aspect ratio = Smaller dimension to larger dimension of the
