REQUEST LETTER

From,
Anonymous

Date:- 17th May, 2023

To,
Ms. Michelle Gardner
Principal
St. Jude’s School
Majra -Dehradun

Dear Madam,
I am writing this letter to you on the behalf of the students of X SCIENCE ‘C’.
This is to bring to your kind information that we are unable to understand
anything that is being taught to us by our Mathematics teacher Mrs. Sushma
Kapoor.

She is teaching me from Class IX, in class 8th I scored 80+ in Mathematics but
my downfall started from class IX so, clearly I am not the problem. On the very
first day she said and I quote,
“I ONLY COME TO SCHOOL TO GET SALARY AND NOT TO TEACH YOU,
TEACHING YOU IS THE WAY I GET SALARY, IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND MATHS
THEN ITS CLEARLY YOUR PROBLEM, ONCE I STEP OUT OF THE CLASS I DON’T
CARE ABOUT ANYONE OF YOU AND I CONTINUE LIVING MY LIFE.”

If a teacher is teaching with a mindset like this I don’t think that she cares
about his/her students’ future. On the other hand our Physics teacher Mr.
Pankaj Sharma made us fall in love with physics. Both of them are teachers but
Pankaj sir teaches us by his heart but, when Sushma ma’am teaches us it feels
like she is talking to herself. Her classes are not interactive at all. Her past
students feel the same as we feel.

Many students of my class are like her puppets who do whatever she says and
fear to speak anything against her that is why I am writing this letter
Anonymously but if you call 10 students form my class to your office I will
come there for sure.
If a teacher teaches in an interesting way no child dares to talk, that is the
reason the class remains silent when Mr. Deepak Purohit takes his class
because he makes subject like computers fun.
Ccj
One day a boy from our class asked her “Ma’am what is the use of
factorisation” and she replied “I don’t know, search it on Google.”

This shows how much she cares!

Therefore, I request you to appoint a new Maths teacher to our class and if
possible please appoint Bisht sir or Rakesh Sir to our class. We are hoping help
from your side.

The student's letter implies that teacher-student relationships significantly impact educational outcomes. Positive relationships, as demonstrated by Mr. Pankaj Sharma and Mr. Deepak Purohit, who personalize learning and engage students, lead to increased interest and better academic performance. In contrast, Mrs. Kapoor’s lack of interest and empathy results in student dissatisfaction, disengagement, and declining performance. This highlights the importance of care, support, and interactive teaching in fostering a conducive learning environment and improving educational outcomes .

The student's communication strategy is formal, detailed, and structured, starting with a respectful salutation and clearly outlining their concerns. The use of specific anecdotes and stark comparison between teachers like Mr. Sharma and Mr. Purohit effectively illustrate Mrs. Kapoor's shortcomings. The anonymous approach reflects both the gravity and sensitivity of the issue, indicating a fear of reprisal while seeking an open dialogue. Such an approach is effective as it provides a comprehensive view of the situation, emotionally engages the reader with a call to action, and maintains the student's anonymity, thus encouraging honest discourse .

The student's anonymity underscores the imbalance of power and lack of agency students may feel within educational settings. Fear of reprisal or being singled out can discourage students from openly addressing grievances, revealing a potential culture of intimidation or ineffective communication channels. The students' reliance on anonymity suggests a need for systemic change where students' voices are empowered and respected, fostering an environment of mutual trust and open communication between students and faculty .

The comparison reflects how diverse teaching styles—caring and engaging versus indifferent and passive—can significantly impact learning environments. Teachers like Mr. Pankaj Sharma and Mr. Deepak Purohit, who employ interactive and student-centered styles, create engaging and motivational learning environments. In contrast, Mrs. Kapoor's passive approach results in disengagement and dissatisfaction, suggesting that teaching methods deeply influence student attitude, involvement, and academic success. This underscores the importance of adaptable and empathetic teaching to cater to varied learning needs .

To address these issues, I would first recommend a thorough assessment of Mrs. Kapoor's teaching methods through class observations and feedback sessions. Professional development workshops focusing on engagement strategies and empathy in teaching could be offered. Additionally, creating platforms for student feedback to be regularly and anonymously shared with administration could be institutionalized to ensure ongoing dialogue and responsiveness. Introducing mentor-based peer observations can also enhance pedagogical approaches. Encouraging collaborative teaching practices within departments may aid in integrating successful strategies from teachers like Mr. Sharma and Mr. Purohit, ultimately enhancing overall educational quality .

The student's perception of Mrs. Kapoor as uninterested and dismissive undermines their engagement in mathematics. The letter indicates that this perception is rooted in Mrs. Kapoor's lack of interactivity and empathy, illustrated by her response to a student's question to search answers on Google. As a result, students feel a decline in enthusiasm and performance, shown by the student's personal experience of decreasing math scores from 8th to 9th grade after being taught by Mrs. Kapoor .

The student proposes appointing a new mathematics teacher, preferably Bisht sir or Rakesh Sir, indicating a straightforward solution to their grievances with Mrs. Kapoor. By suggesting specific alternatives and addressing the letter to the principal, the student demonstrates an understanding that administrative processes can enact change through teacher reassignment. This proposal reflects their belief in proactive administrative intervention to enhance learning quality and student satisfaction .

The classroom environment under Mrs. Sushma Kapoor is likely characterized by disengagement and dissatisfaction, as her lack of interactive and supportive teaching leads students to feel unheard and unmotivated. In contrast, classes led by Mr. Deepak Purohit seem dynamic and participatory, reflecting a supportive environment where students feel engaged, enthusiastic, and eager to learn. This contrast infers that interactive teaching fosters a positive classroom environment conducive to active student participation and improved educational outcomes .

Mrs. Sushma Kapoor's teaching philosophy seems to be transactional, focusing on fulfilling her role strictly for salary rather than educational passion. This perspective is evidenced by her statement about only teaching for salary and not caring for students' understanding or future. Conversely, the student's letter highlights the interactive and passionate teaching approach of Mr. Pankaj Sharma and Mr. Deepak Purohit, who engage students and foster a love for the subject. They create a class environment where learning is prioritized, and students are actively involved, showing a stark contrast with Mrs. Kapoor's methodology .

Upon receiving the letter, the principal's response strategies may include conducting a confidential investigation, ensuring the student's anonymity is maintained. The principal might arrange private meetings with other students to ascertain the collective sentiment toward Mrs. Kapoor. An effective response could involve observing her classes and providing professional development focused on student engagement. Considering institutional dynamics, the principal may also engage in discussions with Mrs. Kapoor to understand her perspective and identify any external factors affecting her teaching. This balanced strategy seeks resolution while upholding institutional integrity and prioritizing student welfare .
