Chemistry Question Paper (Class 8, St. Xavier’s Doranda – 2025-26)
Q1. Define the following: (3 marks)
a) Compound: A substance formed when two or more elements chemically combine in a fixed
ratio.
Example: Water (H₂O).
b) Radical: A group of atoms of elements that behaves as a single unit and has a charge.
Example: SO₄²⁻ (sulphate radical).
c) Cation: A positively charged ion formed by loss of electrons.
Example: Na⁺ (sodium ion).
Q2. Write the chemical formula of the following: (3 marks)
a) Calcium bisulphate – Ca(HSO₄)₂
b) Ammonium hydroxide – NH₄OH
c) Sodium oxide – Na₂O
Q3. Write the chemical name of the following: (3 marks)
a) PCl₅ – Phosphorus pentachloride
b) AlPO₄ – Aluminium phosphate
c) CuCl₂ – Copper(II) chloride
Q4. How are the compounds named if they are made of non-metals with variable valencies?
Explain with an example. (3 marks)
Answer:
When a non-metal shows variable valency, Roman numerals are used to indicate the valency in
the name of the compound.
Example: Nitrogen can form
• NO (Nitrogen monoxide, valency I)
• NO₂ (Nitrogen dioxide, valency IV)
Q5. Find the valency of the underlined elements: (2 marks)
a) NO – Valency of N = 2 (as O = -2)
b) SiO₂ – Valency of Si = 4 (each O = -2, total -4, so Si = +4)
c) Li₂O – Valency of Li = 1 (2 Li⁺ ions balance 1 O²⁻)
d) MnCl₂ – Valency of Mn = 2 (Cl = -1, 2 Cl = -2, Mn = +2)
Q6. Name the elements and number of atoms in the following: (2 marks)
a) Ferric nitrate (Fe(NO₃)₃)
• Iron (Fe): 1
• Nitrogen (N): 3
• Oxygen (O): 9
b) Magnesium sulphate (MgSO₄)
• Magnesium (Mg): 1
• Sulphur (S): 1
• Oxygen (O): 4
Q7. What do the following stand for? (2 marks)
a) 2Cl – Two atoms of chlorine
b) 2Cl₂ – Two molecules of chlorine gas, each containing 2 atoms = 4 atoms total
Q8. Select the acid and basic radicals in the following compounds: (2 marks)
a) Na₂CO₃
• Basic radical: Na⁺ (Sodium)
• Acid radical: CO₃²⁻ (Carbonate)
b) H₃PO₄
• Basic radical: H⁺ (Hydrogen)
• Acid radical: PO₄³⁻ (Phosphate)
